X-energy Raises $700 Million to Propel Small Modular Reactor Innovation
In a important financial milestone, X-energy, an emerging leader in nuclear technology, has secured $700 million through its latest Series D funding round. This influx of capital builds upon the company’s previous expansion of its Series C round from $500 million to $700 million within the past year, bringing the total funds raised over 12 months to approximately $1.4 billion.X-energy’s cumulative investment now stands at an impressive $1.8 billion.
Expanding Manufacturing and Supply Chain for SMRs
The newly acquired capital will be dedicated to enhancing the supply chain capabilities necessary for producing X-energy’s small modular reactors (SMRs) at scale. The company currently holds confirmed orders for 144 SMR units with a combined generation capacity of 11 gigawatts-enough electricity to power millions of households annually. key customers include industry giants such as Amazon, Dow chemical, and British energy firm Centrica.
Advanced Reactor Technology: High-temperature Gas-Cooled Reactors
X-energy focuses on high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) technology-a design that has seen deployment in countries like Japan and China but remains nascent within the United States market. Each Xe-100 reactor delivers roughly 80 megawatts by utilizing uranium fuel encapsulated in carbon-coated spherical pebbles about the size of golf balls. Helium gas circulates through these fuel pebbles inside the core, absorbing heat that is then converted into electricity via steam turbines.
Collaborations Driving Industry Momentum
The recent funding round was led by Jane Street, which also participated during the expanded Series C financing phase. Other notable investors include Ares Management funds, ARK Invest, Corner Capital, Emerson Collective, Galvanize Ventures, Hood River Capital Management, NGP Energy Technology Partners, Point72 Asset Management, Reaves Asset Management Group LLC., Segra Capital Management LLC., and XTX ventures.
Technology Sector Champions Nuclear Energy Adoption
The growing enthusiasm from tech companies and data center operators has played a pivotal role in accelerating nuclear startups like X-energy forward. amazon’s Climate pledge Fund spearheaded early investments during X-energy’s Series C round and committed to purchasing over 600 megawatts of nuclear-generated power across planned facilities in the Pacific Northwest and Virginia by early 2030s timelines.
Amazon’s strategic partnership with X-energy aims to deliver up to five gigawatts of clean nuclear capacity by 2039-substantially advancing their sustainability objectives amid rising global demand for dependable green energy solutions.
The U.S Nuclear Revival: Small Modular Reactors Leading Change
X-energy is part of a competitive group of innovative startups striving to revitalize America’s nuclear industry through cutting-edge SMR designs that offer improved safety features alongside adaptable deployment options tailored for modern electrical grids.
While several pilot projects are progressing internationally-with countries like Canada and South Korea advancing SMR development-the United States has yet to bring any commercial small modular reactors online; only a limited number operate worldwide according to current industry tracking data on SMR commercialization efforts.
