The Syrian Ministry of Interior has issued a directive to expedite the granting of citizenship to Kurdish populations, including those who were previously considered stateless. Interior Minister Anas Khattab has established February 5 as the final date for completing all formalities related to this new citizenship initiative. This policy follows President Ahmed al-Sharaa’s recent announcement designating Kurdish as one of Syria’s official national languages. The government has also declared March 21 as an official holiday commemorating Newroz, a conventional spring festival celebrated by Kurds across multiple countries that symbolizes rebirth and cultural identity.
