Amazon Teams Up with Anthropic to Keep Claude AI Running on Its Cloud for Non-Defense Innovations

Amazon Continues Offering anthropic AI Services on Cloud, Excluding Defense Applications

Federal Restrictions Shape Amazon’s Approach to Anthropic AI

Amazon has affirmed its commitment to providing access to Anthropic’s artificial intelligence technology through its cloud platform, with the exception of projects linked to the Department of Defense (DoD). This stance comes after a federal designation identified Anthropic as a “supply chain risk,” limiting the deployment of its AI models in defense-related initiatives.

Government regulations Drive Industry Adaptations

The U.S. Department of Defense officially classified Anthropic under this supply chain risk category, requiring defense contractors and vendors to certify that they do not incorporate Anthropic’s AI in Pentagon contracts. In response, Anthropic announced intentions to legally challenge this classification.

An Amazon Web Services (AWS) representative explained: “Clients and partners may continue using Claude for all workloads outside DoD engagements. For defense-related applications involving anthropic technologies, we are supporting customers in transitioning toward alternative solutions hosted on AWS.”

Cloud Providers Coordinate Access Restrictions

This decision by Amazon mirrors similar policies from leading cloud providers Microsoft and Google. Both companies have assured their users that while access to Anthropic’s Claude models will be restricted within defense contexts, thes tools remain fully accessible for commercial purposes.

A Robust Partnership Between Amazon and Anthropic

Amazon is among the largest investors in the AI startup, having invested $8 billion during 2023 into advancing its technology. Beyond financial support, AWS acts as the primary cloud infrastructure partner facilitating both training and deployment of Anthropic’s language models.

A key collaboration includes Project Rainier-an $11 billion AWS data center campus designed partly to host 500,000 custom Trainium 2 chips optimized specifically for accelerating AI workloads utilized by Anthropic.

Diverse Access Through AWS Bedrock Platform

the Claude series of language models is available via AWS Bedrock-a service enabling enterprises to seamlessly integrate multiple third-party AI frameworks into their applications. Importantly, Bedrock also operates within govcloud regions tailored for handling sensitive government data with strict compliance standards.

Expanding Federal Contracts Propel Growth Ambitions

Amazon has secured multi-billion-dollar agreements delivering cloud computing and artificial intelligence services across numerous federal agencies-serving over 11,000 government entities nationwide as part of its public sector reach. in late 2025 alone, AWS committed up to $50 billion toward expanding dedicated AI infrastructure specifically designed for U.S. government requirements.

Pioneering Defense Collaborations Featuring Palantir Integration

A major milestone was achieved when Anthropic partnered with Palantir Technologies alongside AWS in late 2024 to embed Claude-powered generative AI capabilities directly into defense and intelligence workflows. This alliance enabled secure access tailored explicitly for mission-critical environments operating within classified networks.

“We are thrilled about collaborating with both Palantir and Anthropic,” stated an AWS vice president at launch time. “These new generative AI tools promise transformative innovation throughout public sector operations.”

Navigating Classified Contracts Amid Growing demand

This partnership led to a landmark $200 million contract awarded by the DoD in mid-2025-the first instance were an external AI lab integrated advanced language models into operational workflows on classified systems nationwide.

The Future Landscape: Balancing Compliance With Innovation Growth

The shifting regulatory environment surrounding supply chain security presents challenges but also opens doors for companies like Amazon and its partners who strive to maintain compliance while delivering state-of-the-art artificial intelligence solutions across commercial sectors beyond defense limitations.
