Healing Through Community After Tragedy

Home to just over 2,400 residents, Tumbler Ridge is still grappling with the aftermath of a tragic mass shooting earlier this year that claimed eight lives-including five young teenagers aged 12 and 13 attending their local secondary school. Among those lost was Ezekiel Schofield,remembered by teammates as “joyful and kind-hearted.” Another victim, Maya Gebala-known for her lively spirit-is currently hospitalized with critical injuries sustained during the incident.

The Arena: A Sanctuary Beyond Ice Sports

Following this heartbreaking event, residents have found comfort within their multi-purpose community centre-a facility that includes not only an ice rink but also amenities such as a swimming pool, library, and curling sheets. This venue has become sacred ground where locals come together to grieve and support one another through difficult times.

This deep communal connection inspired Theresa Nevills-a retired Royal Canadian Air Force aviation maintainance superintendent-to nominate Tumbler Ridge for Kraft Hockeyville after realizing no entries had been submitted from her home region.

“That space holds profound meaning for them,” Nevills reflected on how essential the community centre is during moments of hardship.

A Reflection of Community Identity Through Sport

Amy heaton-a local hockey coach and parent-highlighted how hockey embodies much more then sport in Tumbler Ridge: “Whether we face challenges or celebrate victories together, this arena represents our true spirit.”

Kraft hockeyville’s Nationwide Influence & Contest Overview

This year marks two decades as Kraft Hockeyville began celebrating grassroots hockey by awarding thirteen communities across Canada-including representatives from every province and territory-with $50,000 each toward rink upgrades. Being named among british Columbia’s finalists highlights how these arenas remain central despite ongoing challenges faced by smaller towns today.

Tumbler Ridge now competes against Taber in southern Alberta-a town recently displaced from its aging ice facility due to an explosion-for top honors in this competition focused on strengthening communities through sport infrastructure investment.
