Lucid Motors Issues Recall for Seat Belt Anchor Flaws in Gravity SUVs
Following previous hurdles with the hardware and software of its Gravity SUV, Lucid Motors has identified a new safety concern that has led to a recall. the company is now recalling more than 4,000 units of the Gravity model due to defects found in the seat belt anchors located in the second-row seating.
Identification of Seat Belt Anchor Welding Issues During Safety Testing
In January, routine safety inspections revealed that certain second-row seat belt anchors were improperly welded. This defect undermines the strength and reliability of the seat belts, potentially increasing injury risks for passengers during collisions.
Unapproved Supplier Process Modification Triggers Defect
The inquiry traced the problem back to a welding process change made by Lucid’s seat component supplier without notifying or receiving approval from Lucid Motors. Upon finding, the supplier promptly reverted to following Lucid’s original welding specifications to rectify the issue.
Scope of Recall and Corrective Measures
- The recall covers all Gravity SUVs produced before February 14, 2026.
- A complete inspection will be conducted on each affected vehicle focusing on weld integrity at second-row seat belt anchor points.
- If welds fail inspection, repairs will include either adding reinforcement brackets or replacing entire seats to guarantee occupant safety.
The Critical Role of Quality Assurance in Automotive Production
This case exemplifies how even minor unauthorized alterations within supply chains can escalate into significant safety hazards. Globally, automotive recalls have surged recently; as an example, over 50 million vehicles were recalled worldwide in 2023 alone due to issues ranging from faulty airbags to braking system failures. These figures highlight why automakers must enforce stringent quality control across every stage of component manufacturing.
“Maintaining uniform manufacturing standards among suppliers is essential for ensuring vehicle safety and preserving consumer confidence.”
