The Toronto Tenant Union is launching its first major gathering this weekend, uniting tenant organizations, local community groups, and individual renters from all corners of the city. The convention’s primary focus is on developing coordinated strategies that enhance housing quality and push for equitable rental policies.

Sharlene Henry, co-chair of the York South-Weston Tenant Union-one of the founding bodies-highlights that many residents endure subpar living environments that undermine thier dignity. “Our mission is to empower tenants so they can assert their rights effectively,” she stated.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School and will culminate with a exhibition outside Crossways Apartments on Dundas Street West.

Organizers plan to adopt proven labour movement techniques such as collective bargaining tactics, picketing, and public rallies. Attendees will also discuss how best to structure this new union and set priorities before formalizing its establishment through member voting.

Joshua Shaw from Climate Justice Toronto emphasizes that housing issues are deeply intertwined with environmental justice concerns. “The home surroundings often bears the brunt of climate-related hazards,” he explained.

“During extreme heat events when apartments lack sufficient cooling systems, residents face serious health risks,” Shaw added.

This intersectional approach highlights why organizing tenants across Toronto not only addresses immediate housing needs but also supports broader policy reforms aimed at mitigating environmental vulnerabilities tied to inadequate dwellings.

Toronto has long experienced friction between renters and landlords; though, recent years have seen these tensions intensify due largely to rapid rent increases compounded by inflation affecting everyday expenses nationwide.In 2023 alone, hundreds joined rent strikes protesting abrupt hikes-a clear indicator of widespread financial distress among urban renters striving for stability amid rising costs.

Tony Irwin, president of the Federation of Rental Housing Providers of Ontario (FRHPO), acknowledges economic pressures faced by both sides: “costs like property taxes, insurance premiums, and maintenance continue climbing steadily.” Despite these challenges he stresses mutual interests: “Everyone desires stable affordable rentals within a fair framework.”

Small-Scale Landlords Advocate Partnership With Tenant groups

Varun Sriskanda representing Small Ownership Landlords Ontario (SOLO) echoes calls for collaboration between landlord associations and tenant unions: “Our goal should be fostering an equitable rental market through open dialogue.” He encourages ongoing dialogue aimed at crafting lasting solutions benefiting diverse communities throughout Ontario’s rental sector.
