Building a Citywide Tenant Alliance Rooted in Collective Action
The Toronto Tenant Union is launching its first major gathering this weekend, uniting tenant organizations, local community groups, and individual renters from all corners of the city. Sharlene Henry, co-chair of the York South-Weston Tenant Union-one of the founding bodies-highlights that many residents endure subpar living environments that undermine thier dignity. “Our mission is to empower tenants so they can assert their rights effectively,” she stated.
The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bishop Marrocco/Thomas Merton Catholic Secondary School and will culminate with a exhibition outside Crossways Apartments on Dundas Street West.
Organizers plan to adopt proven labour movement techniques such as collective bargaining tactics, picketing, and public rallies. Attendees will also discuss how best to structure this new union and set priorities before formalizing its establishment through member voting.
