AirTrunk made its entry into the Indian market earlier this year through acquiring Lumina CloudInfra, laying a solid groundwork for its ambitious growth trajectory.

Industry forecasts predict that India’s total data center capacity will skyrocket from around 1.5GW today to nearly 8GW within this decade. This surge is fueled by soaring demand for cloud services and AI-driven applications spanning industries such as finance, healthcare, and e-commerce.

Maharashtra recently formalized a letter of intent with AirTrunk for land allocation at the Raigad pen Growth Centre, where plans are underway to construct a colossal 3GW facility valued at over ₹2 trillion (approximately $21 billion). In addition to Raigad Pen, AirTrunk is actively developing around 600 megawatts across major urban hubs including Mumbai, Chennai, and Hyderabad.

this declaration aligns with similar large-scale commitments from leading corporations: Amazon plans investments exceeding $35 billion; Google targets $15 billion; Microsoft earmarks $17.5 billion; OpenAI collaborates with Tata on more than 100MW capacity projects; Uber expands its product development centers in India. On the domestic front, Reliance Industries has unveiled an ambitious $110 billion AI-centric strategy while Adani Group commits over $100 billion toward AI-focused data centers alongside TCS scaling up their infrastructure presence aggressively.

Navigating Resource Constraints Amid Rapid Expansion

The rapid proliferation of data centers brings forth critical challenges related primarily to resource consumption-especially electricity demand-as these facilities require enormous power alongside substantial water and land resources. Experts caution that without integrating sustainable energy solutions at scale,these resource needs could become severe constraints on growth.

Deloitte estimates that Asia Pacific’s expanding network of data centers will consume tens of terawatt-hours more electricity annually by decade-end-a volume comparable to powering entire nations like Australia or South Korea today.
