US Government Updates Restrictions on Anthropic’s AI technologies

After a two-week suspension that compelled Anthropic too pull its cutting-edge cybersecurity AI systems, mythos 5 and Fable 5, from circulation, teh US administration has now relaxed some of its earlier constraints.

Broadened Authorization for Government and Industry Partners

The amended guidelines authorize more than 100 specified US government bodies and private enterprises to deploy Mythos 5. Importantly, this permission extends to foreign nationals employed within these organizations, including Anthropic’s international teams who were previously excluded under the initial ban.

Government Assurance on Security Measures

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick conveyed in correspondence with Anthropic’s chief compute officer that adequate safeguards are established to permit controlled access by trusted collaborators using the Claude Mythos 5 model. This marks a strategic effort to balance national security priorities with technological progress.

Status quo Maintained for Fable 5 Model

The updated directive did not alter restrictions concerning Fable 5-a variant of Mythos 5 launched shortly before the prohibition due to enhanced security protocols. Both models had been withdrawn after researchers exposed vulnerabilities capable of bypassing their protections. Currently,no announcements have been made about reinstating Fable 5.

Anthropic’s Ongoing Engagement and Future Outlook

Anthropic confirmed active cooperation with federal agencies aimed at expanding access once again. they highlighted that Mythos 5 is being redeployed swiftly for defending critical infrastructure while efforts continue toward broader reintroduction of both AI models.

“As of June 12, we have been collaborating closely with the US government to restore availability of Claude Mythos 5 and Fable 5,” stated Anthropic. “Today we received notification permitting redeployment of Mythos 5 within select US organizations responsible for operating and securing critical infrastructure.”
