Before this ban, Afghanistan had approximately 25 professional female players; today, moast have relocated internationally, including countries like Australia and Canada.

The Birth of Afghan Women United: A Symbol of Resilience

Afghanistan’s women’s national team last competed internationally with a 5-0 defeat against Qatar in 2021. Earlier this year, FIFA authorized the creation of an Afghan women’s refugee squad led by coach Pauline Hamill. After discussions with players and officials, they chose “Afghan Women United” as their official identity-a name reflecting unity and strength.

“Our sole desire has always been to earn our rightful place-to compete and represent our nation as women,” expressed captain Fatima Haidari before their first game. “We are profoundly grateful to FIFA for providing us this platform where we can demonstrate our abilities.”

A Challenging Tournament Kickoff Against Chad

The competition featured four teams: Afghan Women United joined Chad, Tunisia, and Libya at the FIFA Unites: Women’s series tournament near Casablanca’s Berrechid stadium.

Following this opening fixture on Sunday, Afghan Women United is set to face Tunisia midweek before wrapping up group matches versus Libya on Saturday.
