Bharti Airtel and Investors Inject $1 Billion to Boost India’s Data Centre Ecosystem
India is experiencing a remarkable upswing in data center investments as Bharti Airtel, under the leadership of billionaire Sunil Mittal, collaborates with leading U.S. private equity firms to channel $1 billion into expanding its data center operations. This strategic initiative aims to harness the accelerating demand for artificial intelligence and digital services in the world’s largest democracy.
Key Investment Contributors and Capital Allocation
The recent funding round features three major American investment entities: Alpha Wave Global committing $435 million, Carlyle investing $240 million, and Anchorage Capital adding $35 million. Bharti Airtel will contribute the remaining funds while retaining majority control over its data center arm, Nxtra Data. The deal is pending regulatory approval before it can be finalized.
Nxtra Data Centers: Present Capacity and Ambitious Growth Targets
Currently operating 14 data centers across India with a combined capacity close to 300 megawatts (MW), Nxtra plans meaningful expansions in key metropolitan hubs such as Chennai, Mumbai, and Kolkata. These projects aim to nearly triple existing capacity to around 1 gigawatt (GW) within the next few years.
in partnership with Google, Nxtra is constructing a large-scale gigawatt facility in Visakhapatnam-a vital port city on India’s eastern seaboard-backed by an unprecedented $15 billion investment recently announced.
The Rapidly Growing Indian Data Center Landscape
mumbai alone witnessed a 42% surge last year in data center capacity reaching 768 MW according to industry analyses from global real estate consultancies. This expansion mirrors India’s surging appetite for cloud computing resources fueled by widespread AI adoption across sectors including finance, healthcare, e-commerce, and government services.
Billionaire-Led Digital Infrastructure Ventures Across India
- Reliance Industries: Led by Asia’s wealthiest individual Mukesh Ambani, Reliance has unveiled plans for approximately $100 billion investment focused on developing extensive data centers alongside complementary digital infrastructure nationwide over coming years.
- adani Enterprises: Gautam Adani’s conglomerate has pledged nearly $100 billion toward similar large-scale initiatives designed to elevate India’s status as a global technology powerhouse through enhanced connectivity solutions.
Airtel’s Expanding Footprint Beyond Traditional Telecom Services
Apart from catering to more than 600 million mobile users across South Asia and Africa via its telecom network, Bharti Airtel is aggressively scaling up its cloud computing infrastructure through Nxtra Data Centers. Sunil Mittal also holds controlling interests beyond this segment-in Airtel Payments Bank, which collaborates with Kotak Mahindra bank led by billionaire Uday Kotak-demonstrating intertwined leadership within India’s evolving tech-financial ecosystem.
