Abi Strate Secures Maiden World Cup Victory in Ski Jumping
Calgary’s Rising Star Dominates oberstdorf with 268.2 Points
Canadian ski jumper Abi Strate kicked off the year by capturing her first-ever World Cup triumph, a landmark achievement that underscores her rapid ascent in the sport.
The 24-year-old athlete from Calgary soared to victory on the large hill at Oberstdorf, Germany, accumulating an extraordinary total of 268.2 points to clinch gold.
A Fierce Battle Among Elite Ski Jumpers
Strate narrowly surpassed China’s Zeng Ping, who earned second place with 257.7 points, while Germany’s Selina Freitag edged into third with a close 257.3 points.
“Winning has been my ultimate goal for years,” Strate shared passionately. “There were moments I doubted if it would happen, but persistence paid off and now I’ve reached this milestone.”
Recalling her runner-up finish at Oberstdorf two years ago, she emphasized how well the German hills complement her jumping style: “During today’s initial training jump I placed third and felt wholly agreeable. The inrun is vital for me and this hill provides an ideal setup to find rhythm.”
the Impact of Coaching and Mental Resilience
After placing seventh just one day earlier in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, strate credited her coaching team based in Slovenia for helping restore focus and confidence throughout a demanding season.
“This winter tested me mentally; early podiums created pressure that made me chase results instead of staying present during jumps,” she admitted. “My coaches encouraged revisiting basics and fostering open dialog-that connection truly eased my mind today.”
A Commanding Performance Amid High Stakes
Entering the final round with a commanding 15-point lead over twenty top competitors, Strate delivered the jump of the day-covering an outstanding distance of 136 metres that earned her 146.1 points on her first attempt.
“That opening jump was flawless-everything clicked perfectly,” said Strate. “We simplified my technique to avoid overthinking take-off; as a result, I executed smoothly without tension or needless adjustments mid-air.”
“Leading was unfamiliar territory-I’d never held such dominance during a World Cup event before-but surprisingly it felt natural,” she added.
A Season Defined by Steady Progression and Podium Finishes
- This season alone features three podium appearances for Strate: silver medals on big hills at Lillehammer (Norway) and Wisla (poland), plus victory at an olympic test event last September in Predazzo (Italy).
- She also played a pivotal role on Canada’s mixed team that secured bronze during ski jumping’s historic debut at Beijing Winter Olympics 2022-the first time this format appeared on Olympic stages worldwide.
The Large Hill Event Debuts at milano-Cortina olympics
The upcoming February Games in Milano-Cortina will mark the inaugural Olympic competition for women’s large hill ski jumping-a platform where Abi Strate is poised to be one of canada’s strongest medal hopefuls given recent performances.

A New Era Dawns for Canadian Ski Jumping Excellence
This breakthrough win not only reflects Abi’s unwavering commitment but also signals Canada’s growing prominence within international ski jumping circles amid intensifying global competition-where athletes continuously push limits through innovations in technique and equipment technology enhancing performance worldwide.
