Egypt and Libya Shut Down Activists’ Bold March to Gaza, Organizers Reveal

Global Presentation for Gaza Faces Significant Barriers Amid Heightened Security

Detentions and Restrictions on Activists in Egypt

Egyptian authorities have actively intervened to prevent activists from challenging Israel’s blockade of Gaza, resulting in numerous detentions and teh confiscation of passports. Reports indicate that nearly 40 participants were stopped at a checkpoint near Cairo, where they were held under strict conditions with severely limited freedom of movement.

Additionally, around 15 activists remain confined under surveillance in hotels. These individuals come from diverse countries such as France, Spain, Canada, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. Despite their peaceful approach and compliance with Egyptian regulations, they have encountered substantial obstacles.

The organisers have called upon diplomatic channels to assist in securing the release of those detained so they can proceed toward Gaza.

The Scope and Objectives of the Global March

The Global March to Gaza is a grassroots initiative aimed at pressuring Israel to allow humanitarian aid into the blockaded territory. This year’s campaign drew participants from over 80 countries with more than 4,000 activists ready to advance toward egypt’s Rafah crossing into Gaza.

The planned journey involved traveling by bus through El Arish city in Sinai before embarking on an approximately 50-kilometer walk toward Rafah. Protesters intended to establish a temporary camp near the border before returning to Cairo after several days.

Worldwide Solidarity Actions Coordinated

This land march was part of a broader wave of solidarity efforts occurring globally-including maritime missions by aid vessels attempting entry into Gaza waters-some intercepted earlier this week by Israeli forces amid ongoing security operations.

Confrontations at Checkpoints and Forced Removals

Nearing Ismailia city on Sinai’s outskirts, Egyptian police halted multiple groups en route. Foreign nationals were ordered off buses roughly 30 kilometers outside Ismailia; onyl Egyptian citizens were allowed passage toward Rafah. Several protesters reported having their passports seized during these encounters.

“Our passports were taken away against our will,” shared one marcher who traveled from Ireland as part of the effort. “It feels like authorities are cracking down heavily on this movement.”

A Dutch participant recounted how riot police forcibly cleared demonstrators at checkpoints amid clashes that left many injured before protesters retreated back towards Cairo for regrouping amidst uncertainty about future plans.

Mass Deportations Conducted at Airports

Cairo International Airport became another hotspot where dozens more foreign nationals faced detention or deportation due to alleged breaches related to entry requirements amid intensified security measures between June 12-16. At least seventy-three individuals were reportedly flown back primarily via Istanbul-bound flights while others awaited similar outcomes pending further processing.

Tensions Extend Beyond Egypt: Convoy Blocked in Libya

A separate convoy named “Soumoud,” carrying activists from Tunisia alongside participants from Algeria, Morocco, and Mauritania heading through Libya towards Egypt-Gaza border crossings was stopped near Sirte-a city controlled by forces loyal to military commander Khalifa Haftar.

“The caravan was denied passage upon arrival at Sirte,” explained Tunisian organiser Wael Naouar who noted conflicting information regarding authorization required from Egyptian officials for crossing into Gaza territory.

Regional Security Complexities Affect Movement Attempts

this obstruction highlights wider regional challenges involving various factions controlling critical transit routes needed for access into Gaza amidst escalating conflicts across North Africa and Middle Eastern borders.

Israeli Military Position Amid Worsening Humanitarian Crisis

The Israeli Defense Minister has explicitly directed military forces not only to block demonstrators attempting entry into Gaza via Egypt but also labeled some protestors as “jihadist,” framing them within national security concerns designed to prevent provocations along sensitive border zones.

“I expect Egyptian authorities will stop these groups before they reach our shared border,” he stated firmly during recent remarks addressing cross-border tensions linked directly or indirectly with protest activities seeking humanitarian relief access.”

An Intensifying Humanitarian catastrophe Inside Gaza

This crackdown unfolds against relentless Israeli airstrikes combined with severe restrictions limiting vital supplies such as food, water, and medicine-prompting international humanitarian experts’ warnings that without an urgent lifting of blockades imposed since late last year-Gaza faces catastrophic famine risks threatening millions residing within its borders today.
