Exclusive: Former Sri Lanka President Ranil Wickremesinghe Detained in Shocking Development

Former Sri Lankan Leader Charged with Alleged Misuse of Public Funds

Ranil Wickremesinghe, the ex-president of Sri Lanka, has been taken into custody and presented before the courts amid allegations involving the misappropriation of state resources connected to a personal overseas trip.

Background on the Detainment

At 76 years old, Wickremesinghe led Sri Lanka through one of its most challenging economic crises from 2019 until 2024. Authorities are investigating claims that public money was improperly used during his stopover in London, which coincided with an academic event attended by his spouse.

Law enforcement officials have confirmed his arrest on charges related to financial misconduct involving government funds. Following his court appearance, police await further judicial directives regarding next steps in the case.

The Political Landscape and Responses

This legal action comes amid a broader anti-corruption drive initiated after President Anura kumara Dissanayake took office in September 2024. His administration has prioritized rooting out graft within governmental institutions.

A prominent figure from Wickremesinghe’s United National Party (UNP) strongly refuted any accusations against him. Nishantha sri Warnasinghe asserted that Wickremesinghe never exploited public finances and suggested these charges may be politically motivated attempts to discredit him.

“he was at the helm when our economy was unraveling,” Warnasinghe stated outside Colombo’s courthouse. “Yet now he faces such treatment from those who currently hold power.”

Inquiry into Official Travel Expenses

The controversy revolves around a London layover in late 2023 during Wickremesinghe’s return journey from Havana after attending an international summit focused on developing countries. Initial official statements denied any misuse of funds related to this travel.

  • The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) recently questioned three senior aides linked to wickremesinghe as part of thier ongoing probe.
  • the academic ceremony at the university of Wolverhampton honored his wife with an honorary professorship-a distinction she reportedly funded herself according to official accounts.

CID investigators argue that despite these claims, government money covered not only Wickremesinghe’s travel but also expenses for his security team accompanying him on what was described as a private visit.

Sri Lanka’s Economic Crisis and Austerity Efforts

Wickremesinghe assumed leadership in mid-2022 following Gotabaya rajapaksa’s resignation amid mass protests over corruption and economic failures. His presidency concluded after electoral defeat early in 2024.

Arduous fiscal reforms defined his term: securing a $3 billion bailout package from international lenders helped stabilize what is considered Sri Lanka’s worst financial crisis since independence. Measures included raising taxes and reducing energy subsidies aimed at boosting government revenue despite widespread public dissatisfaction with austerity policies implemented during this period.
