From an aerial outlook, Gaza now appears as a desolate expanse-once vibrant urban centers have become ghost towns while fertile agricultural lands and greenery have disappeared.

The Calculated Assault on Palestinian Roots

This widespread ruin is not random but part of a purposeful strategy aimed at displacing Palestinians from their ancestral territories. By demolishing homes and crippling local economies, the ability to sustain livelihoods is systematically dismantled, making permanent displacement more feasible.

A Family’s Connection Severed: The Story of Lost Land

My family experienced this firsthand when Israeli military forces uprooted 60 olive trees along with several palm and fig trees on our land in eastern Maghazi refugee camp. This parcel was originally granted to my grandfather after he fled his village during the Nakba in 1948-a time when countless Palestinians were forced from their homes amid escalating conflict.

Grandfather Ali Alsaloul escaped al-Maghar as Zionist militias advanced; his village was entirely destroyed much like Gaza today faces. Its ruins were replaced by what is now known as “Mrar Hills National park,” effectively erasing any visible Palestinian heritage ther.

A Heritage Cultivated Through Generations

Ali descended from a long line of farmers who relied on agriculture for survival. Upon settling in Maghazi camp, he planted olives, palms, figs, and prickly pears while constructing a home where he raised his children-including my father. Over time he purchased this half-acre plot (about 2,000 square meters) through installments from its original owner who had generously offered it as refuge.

Though my father moved away after marriage decades later, our family has always treasured that land as a place for reunion and remembrance-especially meaningful to me personally.

Just two kilometers from our home lies this verdant sanctuary within Maghazi camp-a thirty-minute walk through fields dotted with clover patches; sycamore trees; jujube bushes; thriving olive groves alive with colorful birds; foxes roaming freely alongside both leashed pets and strays; plus numerous beehives buzzing industriously throughout the year.
