Gecko Robotics Wins Significant Naval Inspection contract

Pittsburgh-based Gecko Robotics,renowned for its cutting-edge industrial inspection robots and sensor innovations,has secured a five-year indefinite delivery,indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract with the U.S.Navy and General Services Administration (GSA). The initial contract phase is valued at $54 million, with potential total funding reaching up to $71 million.

Robotic Inspections Deployed Across Pacific Fleet Vessels

This partnership will deploy Gecko’s autonomous inspection robots on 18 ships within the U.S. Pacific Fleet. These robots conduct comprehensive examinations of every ship compartment, creating detailed digital replicas-frequently enough called “digital twins.” This technology enables continuous condition monitoring and supports predictive maintenance strategies designed to reduce downtime and cut repair expenses.

“By generating precise digital models through robotic inspections,” explained Gecko’s CEO Jake Loosararian, “we can significantly speed up repair decisions while maximizing asset availability.”

Addressing Aging Fleets to Achieve Higher readiness Rates

The program aligns with the Navy’s aspiring goal of reaching 80% fleet readiness by 2027-a major betterment from current statistics where nearly 40% of vessels are out of service due to extended maintenance periods. With annual upkeep costs ranging between $13 billion and $20 billion,enhancing maintenance efficiency is critical as naval ships continue aging.

From Initial Pilot Efforts to Strategic Long-Term Partnership

The collaboration began four years ago when a port engineer in Japan sought innovative inspection technologies for naval assets. After thorough testing and advancement of a customized preventative maintenance plan, this relationship expanded steadily until culminating in today’s landmark agreement.

The ultimate vision involves shifting from reactive repairs during dock time toward proactive identification and resolution of issues while vessels remain deployed at sea. “I foresee a future where ships avoid lengthy downtime as we certainly know exactly what needs attention during deployment,” Loosararian stated.
