Beginning next month, Discord will implement a comprehensive global age verification system that defaults all users into a “teen-appropriate experience.” Only those who verify as adults will gain access to modify certain settings and view content restricted by age.
Innovative Age Assessment Without Intrusive Data Collection
Many adult users won’t need to undergo explicit verification. Instead, Discord utilizes a complex age inference algorithm that evaluates non-sensitive indicators such as account duration, device details, user engagement patterns, and aggregated community data. Crucially, this method does not analyze private messages or their contents.
Controlled access to Mature Content and Features
To unlock blurred sensitive content or disable the default teen mode, users must confirm their adult status. Access to age-restricted servers, channels, and specific app functionalities is reserved exclusively for verified adults. Additionally, messages from unknown senders are automatically routed into a separate inbox; only adults can adjust this filter.
