General Motors is set to transform its vehicles with groundbreaking software innovations over the next few years. At the heart of this evolution is an in-car artificial intelligence assistant powered by Google Gemini AI, which will enable drivers to engage in natural, conversational exchanges with their cars starting in 2026. By 2028, GM plans to roll out a complex advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) that supports hands-free and eyes-off driving under designated conditions.
This ambitious vision was unveiled at GM’s recent “GM forward” event held in New York City, where CEO Mary Barra highlighted the company’s dedication to shifting vehicles from simple modes of transport into proactive intelligent companions that anticipate driver needs.
Driving Forward: GM’s Renewed Mobility strategy
after encountering obstacles with earlier initiatives, General Motors is charting a new course for mobility innovation. Previous goals included doubling revenue by 2030 through diverse growth projects-many of which have since been discontinued-and significantly expanding software-driven income streams.Despite setbacks such as postponing the Ultra Cruise system initially planned for 2023 and scaling back Cruise robotaxi operations, GM remains committed to measurable advancements.
The company’s latest financial performance reflects this progress: revenues increased by 9.1% last year, reaching $187.44 billion, while software services generated $2 billion by Q3 2025-a significant rise as these targets were first announced in 2021. Additionally, deferred revenue surged nearly 90%, indicating strong future earnings potential linked to digital products.
Personalized AI Experiences Tailored for Drivers
The integration of Google Gemini AI will begin next year across select U.S.-market vehicles dating back as far as model year 2016. This technology aims to create interactions resembling conversations with a trusted co-pilot rather than rigid command inputs.
“Our ambition is a vehicle that truly understands you-anticipating your preferences before you even express them,” stated Sterling Anderson, GM’s Chief Product Officer during the event.
Looking further ahead, GM plans to develop proprietary artificial intelligence systems customized specifically for its vehicle environments and user behaviors. David richardson, Vice President of Software and Services Engineering at GM and former Apple executive, described this future assistant as one designed to proactively support drivers throughout every journey-making travel smoother and more enjoyable.
Pioneering Hands-Free Driving With Enhanced Safety Features
The Cadillac Escalade IQ EV will showcase GM’s upgraded ADAS technology featuring hands-free driving combined with “eyes-off” capabilities by 2028-a significant advancement beyond current systems requiring constant driver vigilance. starting around $127,500 for base models equipped with advanced sensors including lidar-which uses laser pulses for precise environmental mapping-the Escalade IQ demonstrates how sensor fusion can improve safety compared to camera-only approaches used by some competitors.
“Integrating multiple sensing technologies like lidar guarantees superior performance,” Anderson emphasized regarding their self-driving ambitions.
This new ADAS represents an evolution beyond super Cruise-the existing hands-free system covering over 600,000 miles of pre-mapped roads across North America-but whether it will retain that branding remains unconfirmed. Unlike earlier gradual rollouts following super Cruise’s debut in 2016,GMs CEO confirmed intentions for faster deployment across additional models shortly after initial release.
Diversifying Energy Solutions Beyond Electric Vehicles
Apart from automotive breakthroughs,GMs energy division continues expanding its footprint through integrated electric vehicle charging paired with home energy management via its “Energy Home System.” Beginning early in 2026,this program offers customers lease options on bidirectional chargers alongside stationary home batteries designed not only for efficient EV charging but also backup power during outages or grid fluctuations-a direct competitor response targeting Tesla’s Powerwall ecosystem but embedded within GMs broader sustainability framework.
This leasing initiative initially focuses on owners of all-electric Chevrolet Bolt EUV models before broadening availability among homeowners interested in solar integration or resilient energy solutions.GM Energy , launched just three years ago amid surging demand worldwide-including residential battery storage markets projected to grow over 20% annually through 2030-is rapidly gaining momentum despite undisclosed exact revenues so far.
