Honoring richard Smallwood: A Pillar of Gospel Music

The Enduring Impact of a Gospel Visionary

Richard Smallwood, a celebrated gospel vocalist and composer with eight Grammy nominations to his name, passed away at 77 due to complications related to kidney failure. His final days were spent in a rehabilitation center located in sandy Spring, Maryland.

Despite facing prolonged health challenges, Smallwood’s commitment to music remained an unwavering source of hope and determination. His representative emphasized that it was this deep devotion to crafting soulful gospel melodies that sustained his spirit throughout his illness.

A Childhood Steeped in Musical Giftedness

Born on November 30, 1948, in Atlanta, Georgia, Smallwood exhibited extraordinary musical talent from the outset. By age five he could play piano by ear and began formal training at seven. Remarkably, before turning eleven he had already formed his own gospel group.

Growing up mainly in Washington D.C., he was nurtured by his mother Mabel and stepfather Reverend Chester Lee (C.L.) smallwood-pastor of Union temple baptist Church-who profoundly shaped both his faith journey and musical direction.

Trailblazing Gospel at Howard University

Smallwood graduated cum laude from Howard University with a degree in music. During his time there, he joined the university’s inaugural gospel ensemble known as the Celestials and played an instrumental role in establishing Howard’s gospel choir-cementing his legacy as a pioneer who elevated gospel within academic settings.

The Birth of influential Ensembles and Signature Songs

Following teaching roles including one at the University of Maryland, Richard founded the Richard Smallwood Singers in 1977. This group infused traditional gospel with contemporary sounds that captivated diverse audiences nationwide.

this evolution continued with Vision-a large choir responsible for some of Smallwood’s most iconic compositions such as Total Praise. This song has transcended denominational lines to become widely regarded as a modern hymn embraced across Christian communities globally.

“You can walk into any church-whether predominantly Black congregations or non-denominational ones-and here Total Praise. It has truly become part of today’s hymnody,” noted Bill Carpenter on its broad resonance.

A Hymn That Resonates Beyond Worship Walls

The reach of Total Praise extends far beyond church services; notably Stevie Wonder performed it during Dexter Scott King’s funeral-the son of Martin Luther King Jr.-at ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on February 10th, 2024.Such moments underscore how deeply this piece is woven into cultural history milestones.

An Influence Revered by Generations of Artists

A wide array of performers have interpreted songs penned by Smallwood over decades including Whitney Houston who prominently featured I Love The Lord in her film The Preacher’s Wife (1996), along with Destiny’s Child and Boyz II Men among others. These renditions helped bridge gospel music into mainstream consciousness while honoring its sacred origins.

Singer chaka Khan pays heartfelt tribute through live performances celebrating Richard Smallwood’s enduring influence following his passing.

“His musicianship didn’t just inspire me-it reshaped my entire artistic outlook,” singer-songwriter Chaka Khan reflected after learning about Smallwood’s passing.
“He remains my favorite pianist whose spirit continues to influence generations including mine.”

Brave Spirit Amid Health Challenges Toward Life’s Close

Mild dementia alongside other health issues eventually curtailed Richard’s ability to produce new recordings during recent years; nevertheless members from Vision stood steadfastly by him until the end. His legacy lives not only through timeless recordings but also through every soul touched by his melodies and message-as affirmed by those close to him-including Khan who looks forward “to singing together again someday.”
