The case culminated with Hernandez receiving a 45-year prison sentence tied to what officials described as one of the most expansive and violent drug trafficking operations worldwide.

Domestic Corruption Probes Deepen Crisis

Parallel investigations within Honduras have implicated hernandez along with other political figures-both current and former-in schemes involving embezzlement exceeding $12 million earmarked for electoral campaigns. These revelations have intensified scrutiny over his administration’s legacy amid persistent national unrest.

This legal turmoil coincides with a highly contentious presidential election held on November 30th.Following Donald Trump’s controversial full pardon of Hernandez, there were appeals urging Hondurans to back Nasry “Tito” Asfura-a candidate representing Hernandez’s National Party-who currently leads with approximately 40.5% of votes counted.

The vote-counting process encountered disruptions affecting nearly 16% of ballots due to technical failures linked to the system provider responsible for tallying votes. With about 97% of ballots processed so far, Asfura holds a lead over centrist contender Salvador Nasralla by roughly 42,100 votes.
