IntrCity SmartBus: Transforming Intercity Travel Across India
Bridging Connectivity Gaps in Smaller Towns and Rural Areas
IntrCity SmartBus, an innovative intercity bus service powered by advanced technology, recently secured $30 million in series D funding to extend its services into India’s smaller towns and rural regions. This investment round, led by A91 Partners, values the Noida-based company at $140 million post-funding.
The Surge in Demand for Efficient Intercity Transport
With India’s urban population expanding rapidly, there is a significant increase in travel between smaller towns and major cities as people seek better job prospects and educational opportunities. the government has responded by enhancing highway infrastructure-expanding the national highway network from about 56,700 miles to nearly 90,850 miles over the past decade.
Although India boasts one of the world’s largest railway networks, capacity limitations restrict its ability to meet growing inter-state travel demands. As a result, road transport remains an essential mode of long-distance travel for millions every day.
Addressing Inconsistencies in Bus Services
Public bus operators frequently enough face challenges such as irregular schedules and inadequate comfort levels. IntrCity SmartBus tackles these issues through a unique asset-light model that partners with local bus owners instead of maintaining its own fleet. Their proprietary hardware installed on partner vehicles enables real-time tracking and operational oversight to ensure reliability.
A Data-Centric Strategy Enhancing Passenger Comfort
The company’s digital platform integrates ticket booking with route management while analyzing passenger trends to fine-tune service frequency, boarding points, routes, and even seat configurations tailored for different journey types.
To prioritize safety on journeys averaging over 311 miles per trip, IntrCity deploys trained “captains” onboard each bus. Manny buses are equipped with onboard restrooms; additionally, air-conditioned lounges staffed by dedicated personnel enhance passenger comfort during boarding processes.
“Every vehicle is connected via our proprietary cloud-based operating system that continuously monitors CCTV quality, audio systems functionality, and cabin temperature,” explained a company representative.
