In recent months, a notable number of influential left-leaning social media figures have gravitated toward bluesky. New insights from a comprehensive study by the Pew Research Center provide valuable data that highlights this shifting digital habitat.

Tracking Influencer Movements After the 2024 Election

This report expands on Pew’s previous research conducted in late 2024,which examined a group of 500 prominent news influencers-each wiht over 100,000 followers across major platforms-who regularly engage with political and current events. Unlike earlier analyses that overlooked Bluesky, this update specifically monitors these influencers’ activity on the platform.

By early 2025,nearly 43% of these key opinion leaders had created profiles on Bluesky. Notably, more than half (51%) joined after the conclusion of the 2024 presidential election, indicating a surge in interest following the political event.

Political Affiliations influence platform Adoption

The findings reveal clear partisan differences: about 69% of liberal or Democratic-aligned influencers-those who publicly supported Joe Biden or Kamala Harris before November 2024-have embraced Bluesky. In contrast, only around 15% of conservative influencers have made similar moves to the platform.

the Nuanced Connection Between X and Bluesky Usage

This migration toward Bluesky does not seem to come at a direct cost to X (formerly Twitter). Despite Elon Musk’s vocal backing for Donald Trump prompting some users to explore alternatives earlier in the year, an overwhelming majority (82%) still maintain active accounts on X as of spring 2025-a slight decrease from summer’s figure of 85%. This pattern suggests many influencers are adopting a multi-platform presence rather than fully switching allegiances.

Furthermore, while left-leaning creators are increasingly engaging with Bluesky’s unique features-with posting activity rising from just over half (54%) in January to two-thirds (66%) by March-the majority continue prioritizing content distribution primarily through X.

A Glimpse Into Future Social Media Engagement strategies

The emerging trend points toward influential personalities broadening their online reach rather of consolidating it onto one platform.This approach resembles how modern consumers subscribe to multiple streaming services together rather than committing exclusively-a digital “content smorgasbord” reflecting evolving user habits and preferences.

As competition heats up among social networks vying for user attention amid changing political landscapes worldwide-including notable growth in regional platforms like India’s Koo app gaining momentum among local creators-the dynamics observed between Bluesky and X may serve as an early indicator for future shifts across other burgeoning digital communities.
