Mark Selby Champions UK Hosting for World Snooker Championship Amid Crucible Theater Upgrades
Mark Selby, a four-time world snooker champion, has voiced his strong preference for the World Snooker Championship to remain on British soil during the extensive refurbishment of SheffieldS iconic Crucible Theatre planned for 2029 and possibly extending into 2030. Although the World Snooker Tour (WST) has assured fans about future arrangements, Selby remains cautious as Barry Hearn, President of Matchroom Sport, envisions rotating this prestigious event internationally.
The Enduring Significance of the Crucible Theatre
Sence hosting its first championship in 1977, the Crucible Theatre has become synonymous with snooker’s rich history. This venue has been home to unforgettable moments such as Dennis Taylor’s nail-biting black-ball win over Steve Davis in 1985 and Ronnie O’Sullivan’s lightning-fast maximum break completed in just over five minutes during the 1997 tournament.
Despite calls from some players like seven-time champion Ronnie O’sullivan to relocate due to cramped spaces and aging facilities, Sheffield is contractually secured as host until at least 2045 with an option extending through 2050. The upcoming £45 million renovation project aims not only to modernize amenities but also increase seating capacity by approximately 500 seats beyond its current near-980 total.
Global Growth Versus Preserving Tradition
The worldwide appeal of snooker continues expanding rapidly-especially across Asia where China boasts more then 60 million active snooker players, fueling a massive fanbase. Zhao Xintong’s recent victory in 2025 highlights Asia’s growing dominance within professional ranks.
Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia is emerging as a key player by hosting major tournaments such as last year’s Saudi Arabia Masters held in Jeddah-a part of four marquee events offering prize funds exceeding £2.3 million collectively-demonstrating their strategic use of sports for economic diversification and global visibility.
A UK-Focused Solution During Renovation Periods
In light of these international developments, Selby advocates keeping any temporary relocation within the United Kingdom if necessary during renovations. “I’d prefer it stays here,” he stated firmly. “Barry Hearn wants to explore moving it around globally but we already compete extensively abroad including China and Saudi Arabia.” He suggested venues like London’s Alexandra Palace or Manchester Central could serve well given their experience hosting large-scale sporting spectacles.
A Fierce Contest Awaits at Sheffield this Season

Zhao Xintong secured an remarkable 18-12 victory over Mark Williams recently-an emphatic presentation of China’s rising influence on professional snooker’s global stage.
This season promises intense competition featuring top contenders such as Judd Trump; Neil Robertson who currently leads earnings charts; Shaun Murphy; Mark Williams; alongside emerging stars wu yize and Thepchaiya Un-Nooh. Reflecting on this diverse talent pool spanning nearly two dozen potential champions from various countries and playing styles, Selby commented: “Predicting who will claim the trophy is incredibly tough.” He emphasized that this variety underscores how deeply developed professional snooker’s competitive landscape now is worldwide.
‘Ronnie O’Sullivan: A Legend Continues’

The sport’s most celebrated figure keeps setting new standards; earlier this year he achieved an unprecedented 153 break, surpassing previous highest breaks during a major tournament staged in China. Although narrowly defeated by Thai star Thepchaiya Un-Nooh-who himself recorded a perfect maximum break-O’Sullivan remains widely regarded as arguably “the greatest player ever.”
“Ronnie is simply phenomenal-a genius whose achievements never cease to amaze,” remarked Selby.
Tournament Timeline & Future Prospects
This year’s World Snooker Championship will commence on April 18th running through May 4th at Sheffield unless temporary relocation becomes necessary due to ongoing renovations later this decade.
