On Thursday, a series of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) activated lockdowns or shelter-in-place orders after receiving potential threats aimed at their campuses or nearby educational institutions. These precautionary steps led to the suspension of classes and non-essential activities while law enforcement agencies assessed the validity of these warnings.

The affected institutions included Morehouse College, virginia State University, Hampton University, Alabama State University, Bethune-Cookman University, Southern University, Clark Atlanta University, and Spelman College.These schools are located across five states in the U.S.
By late Thursday afternoon, Southern University, Alabama State University, and Virginia State University had lifted their lockdown orders; though, they maintained class cancellations for the remainder of the day as security measures remained intensified on campus.

Virginia State University’s leadership initiated a full campus lockdown early Thursday morning following receipt of a threat. This action resulted in canceling all afternoon classes and extracurricular programs while boosting security presence both on campus grounds and at university-managed off-campus housing facilities.
Spelman College directed its students,faculty members,and staff to shelter in place due to threats received by neighboring HBCUs such as Clark Atlanta University. Spelman shares close proximity with Morehouse College within the Atlanta University Center Consortium.
Simultaneously occurring,Hampton University’s administration suspended all non-essential operations from Thursday through Friday while implementing enhanced safety protocols throughout its campus buildings.
