Widespread Destruction and Mass Displacement After el-Fasher Falls
The city of el-Fasher in western Sudan has been plunged into chaos and devastation following its capture by paramilitary forces, ending an 18-month siege that shattered the lives of its residents.Eyewitnesses describe scenes of unimaginable horror: streets littered with the deceased, families violently separated, and desperate escapes undertaken without basic necessities like food or water.
Fleeing North Darfur: Personal Accounts from Survivors
Fatima Yahya managed to reach Tawila, a town west of el-Fasher controlled by neutral factions amid ongoing conflict. She survived three days without nourishment before fleeing but remains deeply scarred by what she witnessed. Her husband and uncle have vanished amidst the turmoil.
“Bodies were everywhere-in homes, on sidewalks, even blocking doorways,” Fatima recounted. “No corner of el-Fasher was free from death.”
The RSF Takeover and Its Devastating Consequences
On October 26, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group opposing Sudan’s regular army (SAF), seized control of el-Fasher. This victory gave RSF dominance over the last major Darfur city still held by SAF, solidifying their grip across western Sudan.
Before hostilities intensified,more than one million people lived in el-Fasher. As its fall, numerous reports have emerged detailing widespread massacres, sexual violence-especially targeting women-and rampant looting throughout the city.
Satellite imagery reveals Evidence of Atrocities
A detailed inquiry by Yale University’s Humanitarian Research Lab identified at least 31 locations within el-Fasher showing signs consistent with mass graves or human remains since RSF took control. Thes sites also displayed reddish stains on soil surfaces indicative of bloodshed.
Families Shattered Amid Relentless Siege
The intense fighting caused severe injuries among those attempting to escape. Farhat Said fled with her daughter despite both being wounded during artillery strikes preceding RSF’s final assault; though, her husband-immobilized due to a hip fracture-was left behind.
“We endured nearly seven months trapped under constant shelling,” she said. “Moving him was impossible.”
Their 11-year-old son stayed behind with his father as crossing hostile checkpoints posed extreme risks for young males during this phase of conflict.
A Harrowing Escape Through Danger and Deprivation
Said’s journey involved traveling roughly 65 kilometers westward toward Tawila over two days while facing continuous threats from shelling and multiple RSF checkpoints-all without money or possessions. Her daughter still requires medical treatment for injuries sustained during their flight.
Khadiga Abdalla’s Struggle Against Starvation
Khadiga Abdalla lost her husband in an RSF bombardment last year while sustaining wounds herself amid dire siege conditions that forced residents into extreme hunger. For six months they lacked staple foods such as sorghum; Khadiga resorted to eating ambaz-a leftover residue typically fed only to livestock-to survive.
After three days traveling without food alongside her two children toward safety in Tawila-where one child was hospitalized due to severe psychological trauma-the family faced uncertainty as relatives remained missing or dead amid ongoing violence.
The Collapse of Healthcare Services Under Attack
The World Health Organization confirmed that assaults led by RSF resulted in at least 460 patient deaths at Saudi maternity Hospital in el-Fasher alone; health workers were also abducted during initial attacks according to official statements from WHO representatives.
nutritional Emergency Among Displaced Children
Médecins Sans Frontières teams operating in Tawila report alarming levels of malnutrition among children under five arriving from conflict zones like el-Fasher-a direct consequence of prolonged starvation combined with physical trauma such as bullet wounds and torture scars observed among survivors who endured months consuming animal feed substitutes just to stay alive.
Dwindling Displacement Figures Spark Concern over Civilians’ Fate
- An estimated 70,000 individuals have fled since late October;
- Tawila currently shelters over 652,000 displaced persons;
- This number is substantially lower than expected given pre-conflict population estimates;
“Unlike previous large-scale displacements seen elsewhere-such as Zamzam camp earlier this year-satellite data reveals no major exodus routes out of el-fasher,” analysts observed.
This suggests many civilians might potentially be deceased, detained ,or hiding within perilous areas rather than fleeing openly.
