Innovating Leadership: Toyota’s Woven Capital at the Forefront of Mobility Investment
From Finance to Frontier: A Transformative Career Journey
Michiko Kato’s professional path is defined by bold choices that propelled her beyond conventional boundaries.Departing from Tokyo’s familiar corporate finance surroundings,she pursued an MBA at Harvard Business School,a pivotal step that enabled her shift into the dynamic startup ecosystem. This heroic transition paved the way for her to assume pioneering leadership roles within Toyota’s innovation landscape.
Trailblazing Roles in Corporate Venture Capital
This year marks a significant milestone as Kato assumes dual executive positions: Chief Investment Officer of Woven Capital and Chief Executive Officer of Toyota Invention Partners. Her appointment as CEO is historic-she becomes the first woman to helm a wholly owned Toyota subsidiary.
Woven Capital serves as Toyota’s strategic venture capital entity, concentrating on growth-stage investments across emerging mobility sectors such as space exploration technologies, cybersecurity solutions, and autonomous driving systems. In 2023, it successfully closed its second fund totaling $800 million with plans to back more than 20 Series B startups globally. Its investment portfolio now includes cutting-edge firms like satellite communications innovator SkyLink Systems and robotics pioneer Mechano Dynamics.
A Flexible Approach to Strategic Investments
kato advocates for adaptable investment tactics tailored to each chance-from co-leading funding rounds to acquiring smaller or more assertive stakes-aimed at fostering robust partnerships with visionary founders aligned with Toyota’s long-term goals. She states,“I prioritize active engagement to deliver tangible value while nurturing collaborative relationships.”
Championing Gender Diversity in Corporate VC Leadership
The leadership change extends beyond Kato; Mia Panzer has advanced from business strategy roles within one of Toyota’s technology subsidiaries to become Chief Operating Officer at Woven Capital. With women now occupying both top executive posts, this progress signals meaningful progress in an industry historically dominated by men.
Although women have traditionally had slightly higher portrayal in corporate venture capital compared to autonomous VC firms-with data from 2014 indicating nearly 20% female participation on CVC teams versus about 7% among leading venture funds-the sector continues evolving steadily. As of early 2024, women hold approximately 15.4% of investment positions across all venture capital firms worldwide-a gradual but positive trend toward inclusivity.
Mia Panzer: Navigating Startup Finance and Operational Excellence
Panzer brings deep expertise managing financial operations under demanding circumstances-including joining a startup during pregnancy-and prior experience at Goldman Sachs and pet wellness company Independent Pet Partners (IPP). Her move into Woven Capital followed the acquisition of mapping startup CartoMap by one of Toyota’s subsidiaries where she served as CFO.
In her expanded role overseeing finance, human resources, legal affairs, and daily operations for Woven Capital, Panzer focuses on mitigating risks such as organizational slowdowns that can delay deals or misalignments between parent company objectives and startup ambitions. She openly acknowledges overcoming self-doubt-a common challenge among female professionals-as key in embracing this leadership opportunity fully.
“Often women hesitate because they feel underprepared while men tend simply to jump right in,” says Panzer.“I realized it was time I took that leap too.”
The Road Ahead: Driving Innovation Across Mobility Frontiers
Kato joined Woven Capital shortly after its establishment as an independent entity spun out from an internal division within Toyota in 2020. Bringing over fifteen years’ experience-including M&A work at Unison Capital and serving as CFO for AI-focused startup ABEJA Japan-she has led investments into groundbreaking ventures such as reusable rocket developer Skyward Aerospace and autonomous delivery vehicle innovator NavDrive Technologies.
“We are poised on the edge of revolutionizing manufacturing through aeromobility combined with physical AI innovations,” Kato remarks.“These advancements will redefine how products are created globally.”
Nurturing Purpose-Driven leadership Inspired by Ikigai Principles
The Japanese philosophy ikigai, which encourages discovering fulfillment where passion intersects skillset meets societal contribution alongside fair compensation resonates strongly with both leaders:
- Kato draws motivation from her family heritage rooted deeply in automotive parts manufacturing;
- Panzer advises other women entering male-centric industries not only meet expectations but quietly surpass them through resilience;
- Together they exemplify how mission-driven leadership fuels success amid rapidly evolving fields like mobility technology investment.
