To enhance the safety of its drivers, Uber has introduced a discreet pilot program that enables in-app video recording for drivers operating in several indian metropolitan areas. This initiative aims to tackle the low adoption of dashcams among drivers and curb incidents involving passenger misconduct.

In regions like Delhi-NCR, numerous Uber drivers have reported harassment by passengers, including threats based on fabricated complaints that could lead to account suspensions or fines. One driver revealed that female passengers traveling late at night often insist on specific routes rather than following the app’s navigation; refusal sometimes results in threats of false accusations.
The introduction of video recording is seen by many drivers as a valuable tool to provide clear evidence during disputes with riders. Nonetheless, some remain doubtful about whether Uber will consistently back them up when conflicts arise, especially as paying customers hold significant influence and can easily switch platforms if dissatisfied.
Details and Reach of the Pilot Initiative
The feature was gradually rolled out starting May and now operates across ten key Indian cities: Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, pune, Hyderabad, Chandigarh, Kolkata, Jaipur, and Lucknow.When video recording is active during rides, passengers receive an on-screen alert notifying them about it.
An official from Uber clarified that all recorded videos are encrypted twice and stored exclusively on the driver’s device. neither Uber nor any external party can access these recordings unless voluntarily submitted by users as part of a safety complaint. To safeguard privacy further, videos not used within seven days are automatically deleted from devices.
