The sanctions also cover individuals accused of involvement in the attempted assassination of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia via a Novichok nerve agent attack carried out on UK soil in 2018. This latest round of sanctions coincides with increased defense budgets allocated by the UK government aimed at strengthening national security capabilities against threats including cyber warfare, nuclear escalation risks, and conventional military aggression from adversaries like Russia.
Together, NATO allies and European Union member states have publicly condemned Russia’s destabilizing hybrid tactics. On the same day Britain announced its measures targeting GRU units, EU countries approved robust new sanctions addressing multiple aspects supporting Russia’s war effort-such as lowering price caps for Russian oil exports; banning transactions involving Nord Stream gas pipelines; and sanctioning additional vessels operating within shadow fleets circumventing existing embargoes worldwide.
