Derek Shulman’s musical foundation was deeply rooted in Portsmouth, England, where his father’s career as a jazz trumpeter profoundly influenced him and his brothers Phil and Ray. In the mid-1960s, the trio gained initial recognition with Simon dupree and the Big Sound, a psychedelic rock band that scored a hit with “Kites.” Despite this commercial success,Derek felt creatively confined by their pop-oriented image.
“Having a hit single was both a blessing and a curse,” Derek recalls. “We earned good money playing shows, but audiences only wanted our hits-not the new directions we were exploring musically. It stifled our artistic freedom.”
A Brief Intersection with an Emerging Star
During their tenure with Simon Dupree, the Shulman brothers briefly collaborated with Reginald Dwight-who would later become Elton John-as their keyboardist. Derek fondly remembers this period as one of mutual inspiration.
“He was an remarkable talent,” Derek says. “We became close friends then; he encouraged us to experiment before embarking on his own legendary career.”
After Simon dupree disbanded in 1969, the brothers formed Gentle Giant-a progressive rock ensemble that again caught dwight’s attention. Even though they shared new material like “Skyline Pigeon,” further collaboration never materialized.
“Thankfully we declined,” Derek smiles. “He soon adopted the name Elton John-and we’ve stayed friends ever as.”
The Birth of Gentle Giant: Crafting an Eclectic Soundscape
Throughout the 1970s,Gentle Giant established themselves as pioneers within Britain’s progressive rock scene. The lineup featured Derek on vocals and various instruments alongside Ray (bass), Phil (vocals/woodwinds), Kerry Minnear (keyboards), Gary Green (guitar), and drummers including John Weathers.

“Initially fans booed us because they came for Sabbath’s heavier style,” Derek recounts.“But gradually they warmed up thanks to our seasoned stage presence.”
This tour fostered enduring friendships between members of both bands despite contrasting genres-highlighting mutual respect across musical boundaries.
