Zipline, a pioneering American startup specializing in autonomous drone logistics, is set to commence operations in Houston and phoenix early this year. This initiative forms part of an enterprising expansion plan supported by a recent $600 million capital injection.
Major Capital Injection Drives Multi-State Expansion

This financial boost comes from a mix of existing investors and newcomers including Fidelity Management & Research Company, Baillie Gifford, Valor Equity Partners, and Tiger Global.
Building an End-to-End Autonomous Delivery Network
Founded in 2014, Zipline has developed a fully integrated drone delivery platform featuring proprietary logistics software alongside automated launch and recovery systems paired with custom-designed drones. The company’s commercial operations began in 2016 with autonomous deliveries of vital medical supplies such as blood products throughout Rwanda.
Currently, Zipline operates across five African countries and also multiple urban hubs within the United States and Japan-delivering not only healthcare essentials but also food items, retail merchandise, and agricultural inputs.
A Versatile Drone Fleet Designed for Varied Missions
The U.S.-based home delivery service launched last year allows consumers to order food and retail goods via a dedicated mobile app.This offering leverages Zipline’s Platform 2 drones capable of transporting payloads up to eight pounds over distances reaching ten miles from their distribution centers.
For extended-range missions covering up to 120 miles round trip-primarily serving enterprise clients including government agencies-the company deploys its larger Platform 1 drones. Initial rollouts of Platform 2 took place in pea Ridge, Arkansas as well as the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex through partnerships with Walmart alongside more than twelve restaurant brands.

Zipline plans imminent launches in Seattle while continuing collaborations with major chains such as Panera Bread, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Crumbl Cookies, Blaze Pizza, Wendy’s nationwide locations, and Little Caesars pizza outlets.

This geographic expansion has fueled rapid growth: after surpassing one million drone deliveries earlier this year (2024), Zipline recently exceeded two million total global deliveries. Within the United States alone, weekly delivery volumes have grown approximately fifteen percent month-over-month for seven consecutive months-a clear indicator of escalating consumer demand for swift autonomous logistics solutions.
