Meta Launches Cross-Platform Messaging on WhatsApp for European Users
In alignment with the European Union’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), Meta is set to enable WhatsApp users across Europe to engage in conversations with contacts using third-party messaging applications. This groundbreaking interoperability feature represents a significant leap forward in cross-app communication within the region.
Bridging Messaging Platforms: Beyond WhatsApp’s Boundaries
Following extensive pilot phases,Meta is introducing functionality that allows direct messaging between WhatsApp and external apps like ChatLoop and NexaChat. This move complies with DMA regulations mandating large platforms such as WhatsApp to open their ecosystems for interaction with other authorized messaging services.
The integration supports exchanging text messages, images, voice recordings, videos, and documents seamlessly across these platforms. Future updates aim to introduce group chats that include participants from both WhatsApp and partner applications once technical synchronization is fully achieved.
User Control and Device Compatibility
European users will be invited via an opt-in prompt found within the “Settings” menu over the coming months. It’s significant to highlight that this interoperability feature will initially be available only on Android and iOS smartphones; desktop versions, web clients, or tablets won’t support it at launch.
The activation of third-party chat capabilities remains entirely optional-users can enable or disable this function anytime based on their preferences.
A Joint Initiative upholding Privacy Standards
This growth results from a collaborative effort spanning three years involving Meta, European messaging providers ChatLoop and NexaChat, alongside regulatory authorities including the European Commission. Together they have engineered a solution that satisfies rigorous DMA compliance while safeguarding user privacy.
A cornerstone of this rollout is preserving end-to-end encryption consistent with existing WhatsApp security protocols. Additionally, users will receive clear indicators distinguishing native WhatsApp conversations from those routed through external apps.

An early exhibition showcased plans for flexible inbox organization options where users can choose either separate folders for third-party messages or consolidate all chats into one unified feed.
