French Open Drama: Tamara Korpatsch Sparks Controversy by Snubbing Wang Xinyu’s Handshake at Roland Garros

French Open Drama: Korpatsch and Wang Clash Over Controversial Line Call

In a tense second-round match at the French Open, Tamara Korpatsch declined to shake hands with Wang Xinyu after securing a hard-earned victory, fueled by frustration over accusations of unfair play stemming from a disputed line call.

Contentious Ball Mark Dispute Fuels On-Court Friction

The controversy erupted late in the opening set of Korpatsch’s 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 win on Court 7. Wang was convinced her shot had landed inside the baseline, but Korpatsch pointed to a ball mark that appeared beyond the boundary line.

The situation escalated when Wang crossed over to inspect the mark on Korpatsch’s side of the net. This breach prompted chair umpire Aurelie Tourte to issue Wang a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct. The incident cast a shadow over the remainder of their encounter.

Korpatsch Shares Her Perspective on What Happened

“It was an extended rally from her side, and I clearly saw that ball was out,” explained Germany’s Korpatsch. “There were actually two marks-one old and one fresh-and both were outside.I wasn’t sure which one counted until the umpire came down to clarify.”

“The Hawk-Eye replay confirmed it was roughly eight millimeters out,” she added. “Wang didn’t accept this and stepped onto my court side to check herself.”

This violation of protocol contributed directly to no handshake at match conclusion as Wang voiced displeasure with how officials handled the ball marks.

The challenge of Clay Court Line Calls Without Technology

unlike other Grand Slam events employing electronic systems like Hawk-Eye Live or instant replay challenges, roland Garros depends largely on human judgment supported by visible clay imprints left by tennis balls. While this tradition preserves authenticity unique to clay courts, it also opens room for subjective interpretation and disputes.

Korpatsch Stands Firm against Fairness Allegations

Korpatsch expressed dismay at being accused of dishonesty during this episode:

“She suggested I wasn’t playing fairly or something along those lines,” said Korpatsch.”But we had one of tennis’ most respected umpires overseeing our match-I don’t understand how anyone could accuse me of cheating.”

“With cameras everywhere capturing every moment and officials scrutinizing details closely, attempting any deception would be futile,” she continued. “When chasing that shot myself initially, I thought it might have been out too-I just waited for confirmation from the umpire about which mark was correct.”

A Career Milestone: Breaking Into Roland Garros Third Round

This victory marked an significant milestone for Korpatsch as she advanced into her first-ever third round at Roland Garros-a notable step forward in her professional journey-where she is slated to face seventh seed Elina Svitolina next.
