Anthropic Updates Pricing Structure for Claude CodeS Third-Party Integrations
Users of Anthropic’s AI-powered coding assistant, Claude Code, should prepare for increased expenses when utilizing third-party integrations like OpenClaw. Beginning April 4 at 12 PM Pacific Time, these external tool usages will no longer be included within the standard subscription allowances.
Transition to Usage-Based Billing for External Services
An official notification informed customers that from this date onward, interactions with third-party tools-including OpenClaw-will be billed separately under a pay-as-you-go model. This marks the end of previously unlimited or bundled access to such integrations within existing subscription plans.
The company clarified that while this new pricing approach starts with OpenClaw today, it will soon apply to all other external applications connected to Claude Code.
Technical Complexities Prompt Pricing Revision
Boris Cherny,head of Claude Code at Anthropic,shared insights on social media explaining that their current subscription system was not engineered to handle the distinct usage patterns generated by third-party apps. He stressed the importance of sustainable growth management in order to maintain dependable service quality over time.
“Our subscriptions weren’t designed around how these external tools interact with our platform,” Cherny explained. “We’re implementing measured steps to responsibly manage expansion.”
Open Source Community Responds Amid Industry Shifts
This proclamation comes shortly after Peter Steinberger-the developer behind OpenClaw-joined Anthropic’s rival company OpenAI. Despite his move, OpenClaw continues as an open source initiative supported by resources from OpenAI.
Steinberger and board member Dave Morin reportedly engaged in talks with Anthropic leadership aiming to delay immediate price increases but only succeeded in postponing them by one week. Steinberger commented on the situation: “It’s ironic how they first incorporate popular features into their proprietary platform and then limit open source accessibility.”

Cherny reassured users that members of the Claude Code team remain strong proponents of open source software; he himself has contributed enhancements focused on improving prompt cache efficiency specifically benefiting users of OpenClaw.
The revised pricing is driven primarily by technical limitations rather than opposition toward open source projects philosophically. To facilitate a smooth transition, Anthropic is offering full refunds where applicable and aims for greater transparency regarding its policies moving forward.
