Earth’s Seventh Quasi-Lunar Companion: Unveiling 2025 PN7

Astronomers have recently uncovered a new quasi-lunar companion orbiting near Earth, named 2025 PN7. This small Apollo-class asteroid was detected in August by the Pan-STARRS 1 telescope situated in Hawaii, identified through its reflected sunlight.

Understanding Quasi-Lunar Moons and Their Unique Orbits

Unlike our permanent Moon, quasi-lunar moons like 2025 PN7 are not gravitationally bound to Earth. Rather, thay follow independant solar orbits that occasionally bring them close enough to appear as temporary satellites. As a notable example, 2025 PN7 approaches within roughly 299,000 kilometers of Earth-closer than the average lunar distance of about 384,000 kilometers-but can also drift as far away as nearly 17 million kilometers.

This fleeting association contrasts with true moons that remain locked within their planet’s gravity indefinitely. To qualify as a genuine moon rather than a quasi-satellite or mini-moon, an object must be continuously held by its planet’s gravitational pull.

The Orbital Dance and Lifespan of Earth’s Newest Quasi-Moon

Since around the mid-1900s, asteroid 2025 PN7 has been engaged in this resonant orbital pattern with Earth and is expected to maintain this relationship until approximately the year 2083. This extended timespan illustrates how some near-Earth objects can linger in synchronized orbits far longer than typical transient visitors.

The Arjuna Asteroids: Earth’s Co-Orbiting Neighbors

The seven confirmed quasi-lunar moons orbiting near Earth belong to the Arjuna group-a collection of near-earth asteroids whose paths closely mimic Earth’s journey around the Sun. Unlike dense asteroid belts such as those between Mars and Jupiter, these bodies form a loosely connected population sharing similar orbital characteristics with our planet.

Differentiating Between Mini Moons and Quasi-Lunars Near Earth

Though both mini moons and quasi-lunar moons temporarily accompany our planet, they differ significantly:

  • Quasi-lunar moons: These objects share Earth’s orbital period around the Sun in a stable resonance lasting decades or even centuries.
  • Mini moons: Smaller bodies that briefly enter horseshoe-shaped orbits around Earth itself but typically remain captured only for weeks or months before resuming independent solar trajectories.

The Current Lineup of Known Quasi-Lunars Orbiting Near Us

The roster now includes seven recognized members: 164207 Cardea; 277810 (2006 FV35); 2013 LX28; 2014 OL339; 469219 Kamoʻoalewa (2016 HO3); recently found 2023 FW13; and newly added 2025 PN7.
