At a poignant event marking the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, Alexia Cousins found empowerment by lighting a traditional Inuit qulliq, symbolizing hope and resilience. This moment encouraged her to courageously disclose her own experience with sexual assault.

“I felt compelled to speak out, showing that healing is possible even after trauma,” Cousins expressed from Iqaluit.”breaking the silence is essential in preventing further harm.”

The Intricacies of a Challenging Relationship

Cousins has filed an official sexual assault complaint with the Iqaluit RCMP against Nastania Mullin,former CEO of the Manitoba Inuit Association. Their connection began when Cousins was 15 years old through participation in a peer-led sexual health education program; mullin was slightly older at that time.

Their relationship was sporadic and informal. At age 16, Cousins became pregnant with MullinS child despite not being in an exclusive relationship during that period.

“I gave birth shortly after turning 17,” she recalled. “Although most encounters were consensual, there were two instances where I now understand coercion played a role-times when refusing wasn’t truly an option.”

Parenting Through Adversity

Cousins raised their daughter Cassiar-now aged 20-as a single mother while completing high school largely without support. She has agreed to share her story publicly under her real name.

Custody arrangements between Cousins and Mullin remained informal but somewhat shared until Cassiar turned eight years old; since then contact has been minimal following Cassiar’s decision seven years ago to cut ties with her father.

Challenges Accessing Support and Justice

“Pursuing child support proved complicated,” saeid Cousins. “Mullin’s legal expertise often complicated matters; as a single parent finding affordable legal help was nearly impossible.”

Mullin currently faces suspension from the nunavut Law Society due to failure to renew membership amid ongoing investigations related to multiple complaints under review by authorities.

The former CEO served at Manitoba Inuit Association from September 2022 until his termination in November 2025 following allegations concerning sexual misconduct.
