Honduras Election Council Member Sounds Alarm Over Shocking ‘Intimidation’ by Colleague

Honduras Election Crisis: Allegations adn uncertainty in a Neck-and-Neck Race

Internal Strife Within the Electoral Council

The political climate in Honduras has become increasingly tense as the nation awaits the final tally from Sunday’s presidential election. A significant conflict has emerged inside the National Electoral Council (CNE), where Cossette Lopez-Osorio, representing the National Party, publicly accused fellow council member marlon Ochoa of using intimidation tactics to hinder electoral procedures.

Lopez-Osorio alleged that Ochoa orchestrated a group of LIBRE party supporters along with his staff to disrupt a press conference at Hotel plaza Juan Carlos, which was intended to announce the resumption of vote counting. She characterized these actions as deliberate attempts to obstruct transparency and delay progress.

A Tight Race Between Leading Candidates

the presidential contest remains razor-close with two main contenders nearly tied as votes continue being counted. Salvador Nasralla from the center-right Liberal Party holds a marginal lead with about 40.12% of votes tallied, narrowly ahead of Nasry “Tito” Asfura from the right-wing National Party at approximately 40.05%. Meanwhile, Rixi Moncada of LIBRE-once seen as a strong leftist contender-has fallen behind in early returns.

With roughly 18% of ballots still uncounted according to CNE figures, these slim differences have intensified scrutiny on every phase of vote processing amid growing public anxiety.

Discord Undermines Confidence in Electoral Integrity

The CNE is structured under a tripartite leadership model designed to represent Honduras’s three dominant parties: Liberal Party, National party, and LIBRE-the party currently led by President xiomara Castro.Though, this framework has rather fostered internal friction rather than cooperation.

Tensions between Lopez-Osorio (National Party) and Ochoa (LIBRE) have escalated sharply. In October, Ochoa formally accused Lopez-Osorio of conspiring with military officials based on leaked audio recordings allegedly revealing efforts to manipulate election results-a charge she strongly denies as fabricated evidence designed to discredit her.

An official inquiry into these recordings was initiated by Attorney General Johel Zelaya shortly after their emergence.

Questions Raised Over Voting System Reliability

Marlon Ochoa further cast doubt on electoral integrity by pointing out technical malfunctions during pre-election voting system tests conducted earlier in November-highlighting connectivity issues he claims support suspicions about internal sabotage within electoral authorities responsible for overseeing fair elections.

Military’s Proposed Role Sparks Controversy

The Honduran armed forces added fuel to tensions when their commander Roosevelt Hernandez announced plans for an autonomous vote count operation-a move firmly rejected by CNE president Ana Paola Hall from the Liberal Party due to constitutional prohibitions against military involvement in civilian elections.

Logistical Obstacles Affect Voter Access and Counting process

This election cycle faced numerous operational challenges including long lines caused by delayed delivery of voting materials back in March; some polling stations nationwide extended hours late into night so voters could participate without obstruction or disenfranchisement.

The ongoing vote tallying process also suffered interruptions due to repeated crashes on government websites tasked with publishing real-time results updates. Lopez-Osorio acknowledged these “technical glitches” but dismissed any insinuation they were part of intentional manipulation during an interview with local media host Fernando del Rincon.

“The issue is purely technical failure within our disclosure platform,” she explained while stressing continued collaboration with ASD SAS-the technology provider-to swiftly resolve problems so citizens can access accurate data throughout all counting stages.”

Narrow Margins Amplify Stakes Amid Remaining Ballots

“We are facing extremely close margins combined with significant numbers yet unprocessed,” Lopez-Osorio noted regarding outstanding ballots expected over coming days that will ultimately decide final outcomes amid intense international attention given Honduras’s strategic role within Central America’s geopolitical landscape.

External Factors Intensify post-Election disputes

  • Foreign political Interference: Former U.S. President Donald Trump publicly endorsed right-wing candidate Asfura through posts on his social media platform Truth Social-warning against alleged attempts at altering election outcomes and threatening severe repercussions if such changes occur.
“It looks like Honduras is trying to change their results… If they do there will be hell to pay!” he declared emphatically earlier this week.
  • Candidacy Controversies: Leftist candidate Rixi Moncada condemned what she described as “imperial foreign interference” directly linked to Trump’s statements while reaffirming her conviction that leaked audios exposed genuine conspiracies undermining democratic processes.
“The elections are not lost,” Moncada insisted firmly; “the entrenched two-party system orchestrated an electoral trap revealed through those recordings.”

A Call for Vigilance among Hondurans During Unfolding Events

Capping off her accusations against Marlon Ochoa’s disruptive behavior during resumed vote count events, Cossette Lopez-Osorio urged citizens across Honduras remain vigilant amid ongoing developments: “Stay alert, Honduran people.”
