Manitoba School Bus Accident: Three Teens on the Road to Recovery After Icy Highway Crash
Personal Accounts from Survivors of the Multi-Rollover Incident
Near Mafeking, Manitoba, a school bus carrying 15 passengers lost control on a slick patch of Highway 10 and flipped several times. Among those injured were three teenagers airlifted to Winnipeg for urgent medical care. Seventeen-year-old Drayah Maytwayashing described the harrowing experience as surreal and dreamlike.
Maytwayashing was asleep when the bus attempted to pass another vehicle in treacherous icy conditions early Tuesday morning.”I woke up just as we started swerving uncontrollably before crashing into a ditch,” she recounted after being discharged from Winnipeg’s Health Sciences Centre.
The teenager experienced a blackout during the crash and later found herself disoriented on the opposite side of the bus with injuries. “I came to covered in blood with a deep gash across my forehead,” she said.
Medical Status and Injury Details
The crash involved 15 individuals including the driver,with Maytwayashing’s brother,16-year-old Drayden Genaille,and cousin Michelle Chartrand,aged 15-both members of Sapotaweyak cree Nation-also among those hurt. Maytwayashing sustained two minor pelvic fractures along with her head injury.
Genaille was released from hospital Tuesday evening while both Maytwayashing and Chartrand left Wednesday after receiving treatment for their wounds. Officials confirmed that four people suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries during this rollover event.
Several other students were treated at Swan Valley Health Centre near Swan river-approximately 380 kilometers northwest of Winnipeg-with one patient remaining hospitalized in stable condition as recovery continues under close observation.
The Students’ Perspectives: From Normal Routine to Sudden Trauma
Before tragedy struck, Genaille and Chartrand had been eager about attending hairstyling classes at Swan Valley Regional secondary School. “My main worry wasn’t myself but my sister,” Genaille shared openly about his concerns following the accident.
Ejected through a window during impact, he recalled waking up lying in snow beside the road before seeking help by running toward nearby houses. Similarly, Chartrand remembered little except waking outside after being thrown clear from her seat while asleep onboard: “The bus kept rolling-I think I blacked out because everything else is blurry.”

“They love going to school every day but right now they’re scared about getting back on any bus,” Campeau explained.
