Starbase Launches Independent Police Department to Strengthen Community Security
In a significant step toward autonomous governance, Starbase-the SpaceX-developed company town in South Texas-is establishing its own municipal police force. This new department is designed to address the specific security demands of the community and protect critical aerospace infrastructure.
City Council Greenlights Formation of local Police
The city commission recently approved an ordinance permitting the creation of a dedicated police department, subject to authorization from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). The department will be led by a chief of police appointed by local officials. Initial recruitment plans target around eight officers,with expectations for the force to be operational within several months.
Securing High-Value Aerospace Facilities
The city administrator highlighted that protecting SpaceX’s vital assets is paramount. “Given the strategic importance of SpaceX’s operations here, having our own law enforcement team is crucial for safeguarding thes facilities,” he stated. The new police unit will focus heavily on maintaining security around these sensitive sites.
A Small but Strategically Important Population Facing Unique Challenges
Starbase primarily houses SpaceX employees and their families, with a population numbering only in the hundreds. Despite its modest size, its remote location-approximately 10 miles from Brownsville but frequently enough requiring over 40 minutes travel time due to limited infrastructure-makes rapid emergency response from neighboring jurisdictions challenging.
This geographic isolation has driven starbase’s efforts toward greater self-reliance in public services beyond policing. Since officially incorporating as a city last year, it has also formed a volunteer fire department staffed by local residents and created positions such as fire marshal while assuming control over building inspections and permit issuance.
Challenges with Outsourced Law Enforcement Services
Initially, starbase contracted Cameron County sheriff deputies under a $3.5 million agreement spanning five years for patrol coverage within city limits. The contract stipulated two deputies on duty at all times and included provisions for county jail usage at $100 per inmate daily plus additional expenses like medical care.
“Recruiting enough deputies through county channels proved challenging,” explained Starbase’s administrator regarding operational hurdles under this arrangement.Sheriff Manuel Treviño noted that limited civil service protections contributed significantly to retention issues among personnel assigned there.
This experience prompted local leaders to reconsider reliance on external law enforcement providers in favor of creating an internal police force more closely aligned with community priorities and conditions.
