Israel’s Ban on Gaza NGOs: A Crushing Setback for Lifesaving Humanitarian Aid

Unwavering Humanitarian Commitment Amid Gaza’s Ongoing Crisis

For more than seven decades, the American Friends Service Committee (AFSC), rooted in Quaker principles, has been actively engaged in Gaza. Their involvement began in 1948 when the United Nations sought assistance to coordinate relief efforts for palestinians displaced during the Nakba.

In those early years, AFSC staff were instrumental in setting up and managing ten refugee camps across key locations such as Jabalia, Khan Younis, Rafah, and Gaza City. Their work centered on providing essential food supplies, shelter solutions, sanitation infrastructure, and educational programs designed specifically for children affected by displacement.

Expanding Aid: From basic Relief to Holistic Support

Over time, AFSC broadened its scope beyond immediate relief.initiatives now include agricultural development projects aimed at enhancing local food security; early childhood education centers offering kindergartens; midwifery training programs that improve maternal healthcare access; trauma recovery services for survivors of conflict-related violence; and ongoing humanitarian aid distribution.

As Israel’s intensified military operations labeled as genocide began in 2023, AFSC teams have delivered over one million meals along with critical supplies such as hygiene kits and fresh produce, addressing urgent needs amid widespread destruction throughout Gaza.

The Growing Threat of Humanitarian Blockades

This year marks a historic turning point: for the first time since its founding in 1948, AFSC faces potential expulsion by Israeli authorities alongside numerous other international organizations. Such prohibitions would gravely disrupt life-saving operations at a moment when Gazans depend heavily on external humanitarian support to survive ongoing hostilities.

The removal or suspension of these agencies risks dismantling vital relief networks that sustain vulnerable populations enduring relentless conflict-induced hardships.

A Relentless Siege Amidst Unyielding Violence

The violence engulfing Gaza shows no signs of abating despite intermittent ceasefire declarations. As October 10 alone, Israeli military airstrikes and ground raids have caused over 420 deaths and injured more than 1,150 Palestinians, underscoring the daily toll exacted on civilians caught within this protracted crisis.

Beyond direct attacks from bombs or missiles, environmental catastrophes exacerbate suffering: torrential floods recently destroyed tens of thousands of tents sheltering displaced families while structurally weakened homes continue collapsing under pressure. The healthcare system is overwhelmed-approximately 600 kidney disease patients have died due to shortages caused by blockades restricting medical supplies.

This blockade also blocks entry not onyl for medicines but crucial temporary shelters and other resources necessary to ease human suffering during this prolonged emergency.

A Systematic Strategy: Displacement Coupled With Territorial Control

the current policies reflect a long-standing pattern aimed at depopulating Gaza through restrictive residency registration rules combined with efforts to limit international aid delivery. silencing autonomous humanitarian voices while dismantling infrastructure creates conditions intended to render life unsustainable within Gaza’s borders .

This approach effectively advances territorial annexation ambitions while eroding fundamental social services including healthcare systems and education networks essential for community resilience.

A Personal Story of Loss Amplifying Collective Responsibility

“An Israeli airstrike destroyed my family home just two weeks before ceasefire talks began.
Nine close relatives perished-including siblings with their spouses and children-shattering our family forever.
While some surviving members say ‘the responsibility is light now’ due to fewer dependents remaining after tragedy struck, my own sense of duty has only deepened.
Nine orphaned children remain under our care; each loss strengthens my resolve-to honor those taken, protect those left behind, and bear witness against injustice inflicted upon us all.”

This burden extends beyond individuals-it calls upon nations, institutions, and global citizens who remain silent amid ongoing devastation-especially those complicit through arms sales fueling bombardments causing immense civilian casualties throughout Gaza today.

A Legacy Passed Through Generations: Stories That Endure Despite Adversity

I learned about AFSC’s enduring impact through Ahmad Alhaaj-a friend who received their support as a young refugee after displacement events beginning in 1948. Ahmad recently passed away under siege conditions worsened by shortages preventing access to lifesaving medication-a tragic echo spanning decades between his youth fleeing al-sawafir barefoot at sixteen — and his final days enduring genocidal bombardment without adequate medical care.

an unbreakable Bond With Homeland

  • lifelong Refugee Identity: Ahmad deliberately never purchased property elsewhere despite renting most his life within Gaza.
  • This choice symbolized unwavering loyalty toward his ancestral village he was forced from, a refusal preserving memory against erasure risks posed by permanent relocation.
  • This profound attachment reflects many Palestinians’ steadfast love even amid siege pressures, a testament transcending hardship imposed externally.

Cultural Narratives Silenced But Resilient

  • “Refaat alareer,” widely known as “Gaza’s great storyteller,” tirelessly documented local pain endured over years.
  • Taken tragically alongside close family members during targeted strikes on December 6th, 2023.
  • “If I Must Die,” Refaat’s poem became an emblem worldwide conveying resilience deeply rooted within Gazan identity – affirming dignity amidst adversity.

The Shrinking Geography Of Home In Gaza: A Vanishing Landscape

The Greater District once included thirty-four villages including Ahmad’s birthplace prior to mass displacements following 1948.
Grandparents recalled vast lands rich with fertile fields far beyond what later became narrowly confined borders.
Over decades however,Gaza contracted dramatically:
– From approximately 555 square kilometers (215 square miles)‑—‑—‑—‑—‑-in aftermath
– To roughly 365 square kilometers (140 square miles)‑-following establishment demilitarized zones afterward annexed

Today Israel controls more than half this territory imposing new boundaries known colloquially as “the yellow line,” functioning as de facto borders where crossing often results fatal-including innocent children like Fadi (8) & Jumaa (10).

This incremental erasure threatens existence itself,meter-by-meter,generation-by-generation.

Endurance Beyond Borders: The Indomitable Spirit Of survival

despite bans targeting ngos, journalists arrests against medical workers, bombings destroying cultural icons-the collective will endures unbroken.

our commitment continues supporting people throughout occupied Palestinian territories regardless obstacles encountered daily.

Gaza symbolizes liberty, sacrifice, and love even amid rubble, tents, and ruins-and it will rise anew just as history has repeatedly shown us it can do so again
