Judge Calls Woman a ‘Danger’ and Sends Her to Prison for Faking Pregnancies and Scamming Ontario Doulas

Hamilton Woman Sentenced for Pregnancy Fraud and Related Offenses

Content Warning: This article addresses topics of sexual assault and may be upsetting to some readers.

A Deceptive Scheme Uncovered in Hamilton’s Legal System

Kaitlyn Braun, 26, was handed a three-year prison term after being found guilty of fabricating pregnancies to exploit multiple women who offered her doula support. Her sentence also includes the remainder of a previous house arrest period, resulting in nearly four years behind bars.

At the sentencing hearing, Braun appeared withdrawn and spoke sparingly, only acknowledging Ontario Court Justice Joe Fiorucci with a brief greeting. She had previously pleaded guilty to charges including obtaining services by false pretence under $5,000 and harassment related to incidents occurring in April 2024.

The Emotional Fallout for Care Providers: A Story of Betrayal

One victim was Tracy Robb, a former caregiver who believed she was assisting someone coping with pregnancy loss. over two days, Robb dedicated roughly 18 hours on phone calls with Braun-who wove intricate falsehoods about her pregnancy-and shared her own childbirth experiences in an effort to offer comfort.

The discovery that no hospital documentation existed for Braun’s alleged pregnancy left Robb emotionally shattered. She described feeling profoundly violated by the deception and has as stepped away from caregiving due to the trauma inflicted by this breach of trust.

A Widespread Pattern: Dozens Impacted Across Ontario

Braun’s manipulations were not isolated; investigations revealed at least fifty doulas throughout Ontario fell prey to her fabricated stories between mid-2022 and early 2023. Doulas are trained professionals who provide continuous emotional support during childbirth as well as guidance through grief related to pregnancy loss-they do not perform medical procedures nor have access to clinical records.

Continued Deception Despite House Arrest Restrictions

even while confined at home due to earlier fraud-related offenses involving fake pregnancies or stillbirths, Braun persisted in deceitful conduct. She reached out via text message claiming she was suffering a miscarriage at 21 weeks after being abandoned by her partner-a further fabrication designed solely to gain sympathy and assistance from another doula.

Court Insights: Psychological Risks Coupled With Lack of Remorse

A psychiatric evaluation diagnosed Braun with borderline personality disorder accompanied by antisocial traits, anxiety disorders, and depression. The report emphasized that without structured treatment-including medication compliance-she remains at high risk for reoffending. This assessment influenced Justice Fiorucci’s decision against extending house arrest supervision as part of sentencing.

“The offender’s deception was fully conscious, purposeful and intentional,” declared Justice Fiorucci during sentencing remarks.

An Extensive Record of Falsehoods Documented by Authorities

Braun reportedly made over 170 hospital visits within one year prior to these crimes coming into light-frequently enough presenting self-inflicted or fabricated symptoms seeking unwarranted medical attention. Additionally, she lodged more than sixty false reports alleging sexual assaults across various Ontario hospitals; police investigations found no evidence supporting these claims but cautioned about potential legal consequences if such behavior continued.

Mental Health Evaluation Rules Out Factitious Disorder Diagnosis

Mental health specialists considered factitious disorder-a condition marked by feigning illness for attention-as an description but ultimately dismissed it due to inconsistencies such as admitting dishonesty when confronted along with occasional expressions of remorse.
The court suggested motivations included alleviating social isolation through relationships formed with healthcare providers perceived as surrogate friends while deriving excitement from risky behaviors intertwined with exploring aspects of sexual identity.

Doulas Demand Accountability While Pursuing Healing

Amy Perry from Kitchener is among many doulas affected by these fraudulent acts; she expressed relief that the court acknowledged Braun’s calculated manipulation rather than attributing all actions solely to mental illness.
“It is frustrating because numerous victims remain without sufficient support while [Braun] receives treatment,” Perry commented following sentencing.
This case highlights challenges faced when professions built on trust encounter individuals exploiting compassion under false pretenses.
