Compounding Red Bull’s difficulties was Jonathan Wheatley’s exit as sporting director in August 2024. Wheatley moved on to become Sauber/Audi’s team principal during a pivotal transition as Sauber evolves into Audi’s factory-backed outfit set for next season-a development reshaping F1 dynamics substantially.

Sergio Perez: from Dependable Teammate To Unexpected Exit

Perez joined Red Bull in 2021 as an ideal support driver alongside Verstappen but experienced a sharp decline coinciding with Newey’s departure. While consistently finishing within the top five during the first six races of 2024,his performance dropped dramatically over the following sixteen rounds.

This downturn occurred despite Perez securing a two-year contract extension through end-2026 based on his strong early-season form; however, before this extension fully took effect he was released amid worsening results late into the campaign.

“Decisions were influenced by pressures they themselves created,” Perez remarked about speculation surrounding his future despite having signed contracts months earlier.

Perez lamented how persistent rumors destabilized not onyl himself but also engineers and staff involved with car development and race strategy: “From Monaco onwards everyone questioned my seat even though I had signed for two more years.” He believes stronger public backing from management could have eased stress across all levels of the team.
“That pressure eventually cost us dearly,” he admitted candidly.

The Challenge of Finding Suitable Replacements Post-Perez

The drivers who succeeded Perez alongside Verstappen have struggled to make notable impacts so far; Liam Lawson lasted just two races before being replaced by Yuki Tsunoda who has yet to finish higher than ninth across eight Grands Prix appearances with Red Bull-highlighting ongoing instability within their driver lineup following Perez’s departure.

Looking ahead, rumors suggest that Sergio Perez may return to Formula One when Cadillac debuts its factory-backed entry planned for 2026-a move generating excitement given General Motors’ considerable investment aimed at advancing motorsport technology globally.

“I know deep down they regret letting me go,” said Perez reflecting on sentiments inside red Bull after his exit.
“People might think I’m happy about it-but no… we once shared something great which slowly unraveled.”
