New York City Debuts Its First Comprehensive Casino Featuring Live Table Games
More than a decade after New York State voters approved expanded gambling, the city has officially launched its first full-scale casino offering live table games. This progress represents a significant transformation in the local entertainment and gaming sectors.
Resorts World NYC: A Pioneering Achievement
The newly opened Resorts World New York City is operated by Genting Group, a multinational conglomerate headquartered in Malaysia. It earned one of only three exclusive casino licenses granted after an intense competition involving industry giants such as Wynn Resorts, Las Vegas Sands, Caesars Entertainment, and MGM Resorts.
Resorts WorldS advantage stemmed from its existing management of one of the world’s most profitable electronic gaming venues adjacent to Aqueduct racetrack. Strategically situated just minutes from John F. Kennedy International Airport, it offers easy access for both locals and tourists alike.
Swift Launch and Workforce Development Initiatives
Following licence approval on december 15th, Resorts World rapidly prepared to welcome patrons by late April. To staff their new live table games-including blackjack, baccarat, craps, and roulette-the company recruited seasoned dealers nationwide while simultaneously establishing an internal training program focused on cultivating local talent.
This expansion has already created over 1,200 jobs with plans to hire an additional 500 employees by mid-year. Construction is also underway for what will become New York City’s inaugural sportsbook facility within the casino complex.
Cultural Significance and Community perspectives
The grand opening was celebrated by Queens Borough President Donovan Richards who hailed this milestone as transformative for Queens’ cultural landscape: “We have struck gold here in Queens!” He highlighted ambitions to elevate Queens into a premier global destination for entertainment and culture.
Additionallly energizing the event was hip-hop icon Nasir “Nas” Jones-a native son of Queens-who is also involved as a partner in the project. Nas performed at the ceremony expressing optimism about future expansions: “This marks just the start; exciting developments are on their way.”
“Queens is where everything comes alive.”
Addressing Community Concerns Amid Rapid Growth
While enthusiasm runs high due to economic benefits like job creation and tourism growth, some residents have raised concerns about potential increases in traffic congestion and crime rates often linked with large-scale casinos.
The Monopoly Era & Emerging Competitors
Currently holding exclusive rights within New York City’s gambling market during this initial phase, Resorts World contributes substantial tax revenues-63% on slot machine earnings and 30% on income from table games. However, these tax rates are set to decrease once competing casinos commence operations nearby under licensing agreements.
The Future Landscape of Downstate Casinos
- Bally’s: Developing a new casino resort on land formerly used as golf courses purchased from The Trump Association located in The Bronx borough.
- Hard Rock: Collaborating with hedge fund manager Steve Cohen-owner of Major League Baseball’s Mets-to build an expansive resort near Citi Field stadium where Mets home games take place.
The state gaming commission finalized these selections following years-long deliberations after voters approved expanded gambling through referendum back in 2013.
Economic Outlook Projects Substantial Revenue Growth
The state projects that all three downstate casinos combined could generate close to $7 billion in gaming tax revenue over ten years. Industry experts forecast annual gross gaming revenues potentially reaching $5.6 billion once all venues operate at full capacity under optimistic scenarios supported by recent market trends across U.S metropolitan areas hosting similar facilities.
“We are permanently transforming New York’s entertainment landscape with a venue designed for nonstop excitement,” said Kevin Jones,
Chief Strategy Officer at Resorts World New York City.”
