Threads Expands Community Topics to Compete with Reddit and X
Meta’s Threads platform is broadening the range of community topics it offers, aiming to draw users who currently participate on platforms such as Reddit and X. This expansion seeks to create more focused discussion spaces, potentially redirecting user engagement from its rivals by catering to diverse interests.
Rapid Growth in Communities: From 100 Groups to Over 200
At its initial launch, Threads featured just above 100 communities covering areas like basketball, TV series, K-pop fandoms, and literature. today, that number has more than doubled to over 200 unique groups. Among the new additions are team-specific sports communities such as Lakers Threads, Knicks Threads, and Spurs Threads-designed specifically for dedicated sports enthusiasts.
Customizable flairs Boost User Expression Within Groups
A recently introduced feature under testing allows members to attach personalized flairs beneath their usernames within communities-a concept inspired by Reddit’s popular flair system. As a notable example, NBA fans can showcase their favorite teams through icons or labels; similarly, book aficionados might identify themselves as writers or passionate readers using tailored tags.

“Champion” Badges Highlight Top Contributors
The platform is piloting a “Champion” badge program that honors highly engaged and influential members within each community. These badges are awarded based on metrics like activity levels and follower counts in specific groups-encouraging meaningful participation and rewarding consistent contributors.

User Base Surpasses 400 million Monthly Active Users Amid intense Competition
Since its debut two years ago, Threads has experienced rapid growth; by mid-2025 it exceeded 400 million monthly active users. Daily visits have surged as well-with over 150 million people accessing the platform every day this autumn.
Diverse Features Enhance Engagement and Retention Rates
The app continues rolling out new tools designed to keep interactions lively: direct messaging (DMs), group chats recently launched across Europe, ephemeral “ghost posts” that disappear after 24 hours among other innovations-all aimed at maintaining fresh conversations and boosting user retention.
The Road Ahead: Positioning Communities as a Social Networking Powerhouse
This swift increase in topic-specific groups combined with identity-enhancing features like flairs and badges positions Threads as a formidable competitor against established social networks such as Reddit’s subreddit ecosystem or Twitter’s (now X) community threads. By nurturing niche interest hubs alongside versatile communication tools,Threads strives not only for rapid expansion but also long-term user loyalty.
