Honoring Mona Khalil: Lebanon’s Tireless Protector of Endangered Sea Turtles

At 77 years old, she passed away amid escalating military conflicts that have severely impacted southern Lebanon.

The recent intensification of aerial bombardments has caused numerous civilian casualties and heightened regional instability, jeopardizing delicate diplomatic negotiations between Iran and the united States. Despite these turbulent circumstances, Khalil remained unwavering in her dedication to safeguarding vulnerable marine species.

Early Life and Awakening to Environmental Advocacy

born in Lagos, Nigeria in 1949, Khalil spent much of her youth abroad before making Lebanon’s Mediterranean shores her home. Her passion for conservation was sparked by an unforgettable encounter with a nesting sea turtle on Al-Mansouri beach near Tyre in 1999-a moment that ignited decades of environmental activism.

Khalil concentrated on protecting the habitats of loggerhead and green sea turtles-two species critically endangered due to rapid coastal development, entanglement risks from fishing gear, widespread plastic pollution (which now constitutes over 80% of ocean debris globally), and artificial lighting that disorients hatchlings as thay make their way to the sea.

Pioneering Initiatives at Al-Mansouri Beach

In 2000, she co-established the orange House project-an innovative eco-tourism venture serving both as a refuge for turtles and an educational center fostering enduring interaction with nature. This groundbreaking initiative raised public awareness about marine biodiversity while encouraging local community engagement along Lebanon’s shoreline.

Khalil also played a crucial role in conducting scientific surveys documenting local marine ecosystems and spearheading campaigns aimed at reducing pollution threatening aquatic life.Her research provided essential data supporting regional conservation strategies amid mounting environmental challenges intensified by climate change effects such as rising ocean temperatures disrupting turtle reproductive patterns worldwide.
