Uber Accelerates Expansion with 500 Data-Collection Vehicles Hitting the Roads This Year

Uber expands Autonomous Driving Data Collection with Sensor-Loaded Hyundai Ioniq 5 Fleet

Revolutionizing Uber’s Approach to Autonomous Vehicle Growth

Uber has unveiled a new prototype vehicle engineered to capture extensive real-world driving data, bolstering its growing collaboration network of autonomous vehicle partners such as Avride, waymo, and WeRide. Rather than futuristic concept cars, this initiative utilizes the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric model outfitted with an advanced suite of sensors.

A Strategic Shift Following Previous Divestments

This development represents Uber’s first internally developed autonomous-capable car since selling its self-driving division to Aurora in 2020. The project is part of uber’s AV Labs division, which focuses on equipping vehicles with sophisticated sensor technology to collect and distribute high-quality driving data among over 30 global autonomous driving collaborators.

Global Rollout: ambitious Fleet Expansion Plans

The company aims to deploy a fleet of 500 sensor-equipped Hyundai EVs worldwide within the next twelve months. This fleet is projected to generate nearly two million miles of detailed driving data monthly. By mid-year, approximately fifty vehicles are expected to be actively operating on public roads across various regions.

Advanced Sensor Configuration and Technological Integration

The customized Ioniq 5s feature an extensive sensor array including fourteen cameras, eight solid-state lidar units, and nine radar sensors. These components have been integrated through a partnership with Roush Performance for vehicle retrofitting. All collected information is processed by Nvidia’s Dual Drive Thor computer system specifically designed for autonomous applications.

uber maintains flexibility in adjusting the sensor setup as needed based on evolving requirements from its partner companies and technological advancements.

Diverse Data Acquisition for Superior Autonomous Training Models

A primary goal behind this initiative is compiling one of the most geographically diverse datasets dedicated exclusively to training self-driving algorithms. The synchronized multi-angle perspectives captured by these vehicles provide critical input that enhances robotaxi software performance under varied environmental conditions.

Tapping into Extensive Existing Data Resources

Uber already holds meaningful expertise in gathering autonomous driving data through thousands of specially equipped cars operating across multiple cities worldwide. Additionally, over recent years it has accumulated valuable insights from hundreds of Lucid air electric vehicles running throughout North America and Europe.

The Crucial Role of AV Labs in Data Management and Growth

The AV Labs team continues analyzing these vast datasets while preparing for expanded large-scale collection efforts using their upgraded Hyundai Ioniq 5 fleet deployed among partner operators globally.

“By capturing data from diverse environments-from New York City’s dense urban traffic during peak hours to rural highways near Barcelona-our dataset strives to develop resilient AI models capable of navigating complex real-world scenarios,” explained an industry insider familiar with Uber’s program.
