MOIA America and Uber Begin Testing Autonomous Microbuses in Los Angeles
In a meaningful stride toward revolutionizing urban transit, MOIA America, a Volkswagen subsidiary, has teamed up with ride-hailing leader Uber to launch trials of self-driving microbuses in Los Angeles. This initiative is a key step as both companies prepare to roll out robotaxi services by late 2026.
Deploying Electric ID. Buzz Microbuses for Urban Mobility
The pilot will feature around 10 autonomous versions of Volkswagen’s electric ID. Buzz minivan, each configured to seat four passengers comfortably. These vehicles embody Volkswagen’s cutting-edge efforts in electric and autonomous transportation designed specifically for shared city rides.
Los angeles was selected due to its dynamic car culture and progressive stance on innovative transport solutions. The city’s vast geography combined with its diverse demographics offers an ideal testing ground for refining autonomous ride experiences.
Establishing Operations and Scaling the Fleet
Since their partnership announcement last year, MOIA America and Uber have set up a joint operations hub in Los Angeles dedicated to overseeing daily fleet management. Even though initial tests involve safety operators onboard the limited number of vehicles, plans are underway to expand the fleet beyond 100 units over the coming years.
The goal is full driverless operation by 2027 once regulatory approvals are secured and operational reliability is proven through extensive testing phases.

The MOIA brand originated in Europe in 2018 where it operates ride-pooling services across cities such as Hamburg,berlin,Munich,and Oslo while experimenting with autonomous vehicle technologies. The transition from Volkswagen ADMT to MOIA America reflects an effort to unify these international projects under one brand focused on enduring mobility solutions worldwide.
Navigating California’s regulatory Landscape
A major hurdle remains obtaining permits from California authorities before launching commercial robotaxi services that charge fares without human drivers present. This involves approvals from both the California Department of Motor Vehicles-which oversees autonomous vehicle testing-and the California Public Utilities Commission responsible for regulating statewide ride-hailing operations.
Uber’s Expansive Role Across Autonomous Transportation Sectors
Beyond collaborating with MOIA America on this project, Uber partners with more than two dozen companies globally developing self-driving technologies across various domains including delivery drones, automated freight trucking, and passenger transport systems.
