Equal AI Raises $30M to Transform Call Screening for Millions of Indians

Transforming Call Handling in India with Intelligent AI Solutions

In India, millions of individuals face an overwhelming influx of phone calls daily-from intrusive spam and scam attempts too essential communications from delivery personnel and financial institutions. While services like Truecaller and the government’s Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) system provide caller identification, simply revealing a name often lacks sufficient context to make informed decisions. To bridge this gap, equal AI has introduced an intelligent assistant that answers calls on behalf of users, extracts vital information, and clearly communicates the reason behind each incoming call.

How Equal AI is Redefining Call Screening

Launched for Android devices, Equal AI has quickly attracted over one million monthly active users with more than 300,000 engaging daily. Unlike customary caller ID apps that only reveal who is calling, this smart assistant offers concise explanations about why someone is reaching out.

The app’s interface provides quick-reply options such as “Please leave the parcel at my gate” or “Kindly deliver it to my neighbor,” which are than spoken aloud by the AI during conversations. Users can also customize messages for the assistant to convey automatically. Every call interaction is recorded; users gain access not only to audio files but also transcriptions and summarized notes within the app for easy review.

Securing Growth: Strategic Funding Accelerates Advancement

Equal AI recently raised $30 million in a Series B funding round led by Prosus Ventures alongside Tomales Bay Capital, with additional backing from Think Investments and Valiant Fund. Notable individual investors include Sameer Nigam (PhonePe founder), Zubin Bharti Mittal (Airtel Family Office), Anshu Sharma (Skyflow AI co-founder), Sandhya Devanathan (Meta VP India & Southeast Asia), and Sridhar Pinnapureddy (Chairman at ctrls Datacenters). This infusion brings total capital raised beyond $42 million.

The investment was structured across three performance-based tranches-a growing trend among startups-allowing equity sales at different valuations within one round. This method enables companies like Equal AI to highlight their peak valuation even if earlier shares were sold at lower prices.

The Foundational Vision: From Financial Data Sharing Toward Consumer-Centric Assistance

Keshav Reddy founded Equal in 2022 with roots linked to Indian conglomerate GVK-known for infrastructure,energy,and healthcare ventures-and initially focused on building a data-sharing platform aimed primarily at financial services such as KYC verification processes.

“Our goal from inception was creating something directly beneficial for everyday consumers,” explained Reddy regarding their pivot toward an intelligent call assistant solution.”For example, when buying car insurance you might receive over 20 follow-up calls within just seven days-something no individual can realistically handle.”

Upcoming Enhancements on the Roadmap

The current release centers on screening unknown callers but plans include expanding functionality toward managing known contacts as well.Future updates aim to empower the assistant with proactive features like autonomously sending delivery instructions or scheduling appointments after user approval. Additionally, development efforts are underway for an iOS version along with premium subscription tiers offering advanced capabilities.

Tackling India’s Linguistic Complexity Through Cutting-Edge speech Technology

India’s rich linguistic diversity presents unique challenges due to widespread code-mixing-the blending of multiple languages within single sentences-and numerous native tongues spoken nationwide. To effectively navigate this complexity,Equal AI employs advanced speech recognition technologies including automatic speech recognition (ASR) combined with refined speech synthesis models orchestrated through its proprietary platform layer.

This multilingual support currently covers over ten Indian languages tailored specifically toward regional dialects while maintaining strong English language processing essential for broader accessibility across urban centers.

Navigating Competition With Deep Local Insights

  • Main rivals: google Assistant’s call screening feature; Apple’s built-in solutions; Truecaller expanding into smart assistants;
  • Niche competitors:a16z-backed Cloaked focusing on privacy-frist US markets;
  • Differentiator:An intimate understanding of local cultural nuances gives Equal a distinct advantage unmatched by global players offering generic solutions;

User-Focused Design Fuels Growing Adoption

“By excelling initially in targeted scenarios such as filtering financial service inquiries or job-related outreach,” noted Reddy,“the app cultivates strong user loyalty that lays groundwork for wider adoption across diverse dialog needs.”

Avoiding Reliance on Third-Party Platforms Through Autonomous architecture

Cognizant of risks highlighted by recent bans imposed by platforms like WhatsApp against third-party chatbots-which disrupted startups dependent on those ecosystems-Equal deliberately designed its system around direct phone calls via its own application rather than relying on messaging platforms.
This approach ensures greater control over user experience without vulnerability stemming from external policy changes impacting core functionalities.
