Harsh Detention Realities in El-Fasher Amid Ongoing Sudanese Conflict
In the western Sudanese city of El-Fasher, thousands remain confined under brutal conditions by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), according to reports from a local humanitarian association. The Sudan Doctors Network has disclosed that more than 2,400 detainees-including civilians, military members, and healthcare workers-are held in overcrowded and unsanitary environments.
Detention numbers and Humanitarian Crisis
The detained population comprises roughly 20 medical professionals, over 1,470 civilians, and about 907 military personnel.These individuals are scattered across multiple sites such as Shalla Prison, a repurposed pediatric hospital used for confinement purposes, and even shipping containers. Vulnerable groups are heavily represented among them: approximately 370 women and upwards of 420 children endure these dire circumstances.
The living conditions within these detention centers have been described as catastrophic. Reports indicate widespread torture-related deaths alongside ethnically motivated violence targeting specific groups. Many detainees suffer injuries from ongoing bombardments but face critical shortages of medical care due to the capture or displacement of healthcare providers.
Disease Outbreaks Worsen Detainment Conditions
A cholera outbreak has been spreading rapidly inside these facilities since early February. Unsanitary surroundings combined wiht limited access to clean water and pervasive malnutrition have fueled the transmission of infectious diseases among prisoners.
Contextualizing the Conflict in Darfur
The RSF took control of El-Fasher in late October after it was the last stronghold held by Sudan’s national army within Darfur-a region long marked by instability. Since then, clashes between RSF forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have intensified into a devastating civil war responsible for hundreds of thousands of fatalities while displacing millions throughout Sudan.
This conflict is now considered one of today’s most severe humanitarian emergencies worldwide; international observers label it “the world’s worst humanitarian crisis,” with civilian populations trapped amid relentless violence.
Accusations Against RSF: Crimes Targeting Communities
The paramilitary group faces serious allegations including systematic human rights abuses amounting to ethnic cleansing within detention centers around El-Fasher. Investigations supported by international bodies reveal coordinated attacks aimed at non-Arab communities nearby-actions bearing hallmarks consistent with genocidal intent.
Civilian Suffering Extends Beyond Prisons
Civilians outside detention facilities also face grave threats.Recent artillery bombardments on displacement camps near Zalingei-the capital city of Central Darfur state-have caused numerous deaths among women and children seeking refuge from conflict zones. Thousands lost their homes during these strikes which further disrupted essential humanitarian aid operations.
Roots Behind Current Hostilities
This destructive war ignited three years ago following an intense power struggle between army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF leader Mohamed Hamdan “Hemedti” Dagalo. Their rivalry quickly escalated into open warfare engulfing much of Sudan without any clear resolution on the horizon.
“The violent takeover has directly led to collapsing health services alongside worsening humanitarian conditions,” notes the Sudan Doctors Network regarding El-Fasher’s plight.
