Perilous paths: The Struggle of Palestinian Workers crossing the Separation Wall
In the West Bank, Palestinians face a grim dilemma where securing a livelihood often demands risking their very lives. with official checkpoints shuttered and work permits revoked amid escalating regional conflicts, many have turned to scaling IsraelS separation wall-a towering concrete barrier that slices through the territory, reaching heights up to 8 meters (26 feet) in some sections.
The Economic Crisis Driving Risky crossings
Prior to the surge in hostilities in late 2023, approximately 390,000 Palestinians were employed inside israel or its settlements-jobs that served as critical financial support for families throughout the West Bank. As then, israeli authorities have canceled thousands of work permits due to heightened security concerns and ongoing military operations.
This crackdown has plunged many into unemployment within a region already grappling with an estimated 25% jobless rate-the highest outside active conflict zones worldwide. As legal employment opportunities vanish and smuggling routes become increasingly perilous or inaccessible due to advanced surveillance technologies such as drones and sensors monitoring the wall’s perimeter, desperate workers feel compelled to attempt illegal crossings despite life-threatening risks.
Tales of Injury Amid Economic Desperation
ahed Rizk’s experience highlights this harsh reality. A newlywed construction worker weighing over 140 kilograms (309 pounds), Rizk tried climbing near ar-ram using improvised gear-a short ladder paired with a rope thrown over the top-to reach his workplace inside Jerusalem.
Tragically, during his climb in mid-June 2025,his rope gave way under his weight from about five meters high (16 feet). He fell onto another climber below; while that individual escaped with minor bruises only Rizk suffered severe injuries resulting in paralysis of one leg and extensive damage to the other after an emergency six-hour surgery.

“I was trapped between two dangers,” Rizk reflected-referring both to physical threats from Israeli patrols heavily stationed along militarized zones and economic desperation forcing such hazardous decisions.
The Human Toll: Fatalities on Both Sides of The Barrier
The Palestinian General Federation of trade Unions reports that at least thirty-five workers have lost their lives trying to cross into Israel for employment so far this year alone-some fatally shot by soldiers; others dying from falls similar to those endured by Saher or Ahed.
Since late 2023 tightened restrictions severely limit access through authorized channels while increasing hazards linked with unauthorized crossings. Additionally, working conditions within Israel are frequently subpar: inadequate safety equipment combined with insufficient training further endanger workers who arrive legally or illegally on site.

The Widening Divide: Social Exclusion Intensifies
Sari Orabi, a political analyst based in Ramallah explains how these policies exacerbate inequality between Israelis and Palestinians by restricting movement not only economically but socially:
“By curtailing freedom of movement alongside resource control enforced through military presence, civilians confront impossible choices between starvation or risking death just trying earn basic income,” says Orabi.
“This geographic fragmentation deepens poverty cycles while increasing reliance on humanitarian aid.”
A Story of Survival against All Odds
Otham al-Khawaja from Ni’lin village west of Ramallah offers another poignant example: In March he attempted crossing but was thrown off balance when Israeli troops fired nearby; falling hard enough to break both legs yet escaping gunshot wounds he feared were imminent.
After months recovering post-surgery involving metal rods implanted into his limbs,Otham regained mobility though not full strength.
“Facing death transformed my perspective,” says Otham reflecting on survival amidst relentless adversity.
“Life gains new meaning when you confront your mortality.”
An Urgent Need for Change amid Heightened Regional Conflict
The ongoing conflict involving Iran-backed rocket attacks against Israel has prompted authorities there toward even stricter border enforcement measures including cutting-edge surveillance technology along barriers separating communities-making already dangerous crossings more lethal than ever before. This escalation compounds daily hardships faced by Palestinians seeking livelihoods beyond their restricted territories amid an unstable geopolitical landscape marked by violence since late 2023 onward.
The emerging stories reveal not only personal tragedies but systemic failures deeply rooted within prolonged occupation policies coupled with regional instability-leaving countless families caught between economic necessity and mortal danger every day they try simply returning home or earning wages essential for survival under siege-like conditions imposed indefinitely without foreseeable relief ahead.
