Wicked: For Good’ Casts a Magical $150 Million Spell on Domestic Box Office!

“Wicked: For Good” Breaks New Ground with Stunning Box Office Performance

The latest release from Global Pictures, “Wicked: For Good,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has made a notable splash at the box office, raking in an estimated $150 million in domestic ticket sales during its opening weekend.

A historic Launch for a Broadway-Inspired Film

This remarkable debut ranks “Wicked: For Good” as the second highest-grossing opening weekend of 2025 so far, just behind Warner Bros.’ “A Minecraft movie,” which earned $163 million earlier this year.It also outperforms last year’s original “Wicked” film launch, which brought in $112.5 million across the U.S. and Canada.

The film sets a new record for Broadway adaptations by achieving the largest opening weekend revenue ever recorded within this genre. When including international markets, global ticket sales are expected to reach approximately $226 million within just three days of release.

premium screenings and Audience Enthusiasm Fuel Revenue Growth

An estimated 10 million tickets were sold domestically over the first weekend alone-surpassing last year’s “Wicked,” which moved around 8 million tickets during its initial run. Data from EntTelligence indicates that nearly 30% of these screenings occurred in premium large-format theaters, marking a notable rise from 18% for the previous installment.

The higher price point of premium formats played a crucial role in boosting overall earnings; while average general admission tickets cost about $15.25 each, premium seats commanded roughly $18.75 per ticket on average-substantially enhancing total box office returns.

The Strategic Mastery Behind Worldwide’s Success

Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s head of marketplace trends, commended Universal’s strategy: “Building on last year’s ‘Wicked’ momentum allowed them to engineer an even more powerful launch for this sequel.” he predicts continued strong attendance through Thanksgiving week as audiences flock to theaters during this key holiday period.

A Vibrant Holiday Box Office Scene Emerges

The previous Thanksgiving season shattered records thanks to blockbusters like Paramount’s “Gladiator II,” Disney’s “Moana 2,” alongside “Wicked.” This year is poised to maintain that energy with “Wicked: For Good” sharing screens with Disney’s eagerly awaited sequel “Zootopia 2.”

The original “zootopia,” released in 2016, opened domestically with $75 million but went on to earn over $1 billion worldwide-a clear indicator of lasting audience appeal that bodes well for its follow-up. Industry experts forecast that “Zootopia 2” could generate around $100 million during its first three days and surpass $125 million throughout the five-day Thanksgiving stretch.

A Fierce Battle at Theaters This Holiday Season

“The remarkable early success of ‘Wicked: For Good,’ combined with other major releases hitting theaters now, has strong potential to rival last year’s record-breaking Thanksgiving box office haul,” noted Dergarabedian.
“This upswing is particularly encouraging following October’s disappointing performance.”

A Transformative Era Dawns for Musical Film Adaptations

This surge underscores how musical adaptations continue captivating moviegoers who crave immersive cinematic experiences amplified by star-studded casts and cutting-edge presentation formats such as premium large screens-trends likely shaping blockbuster strategies throughout upcoming holiday seasons worldwide.
